Can a Nanday Conure be in a aviary with budgies

Postby Mum23xys » Thu Nov 11, 2010 2:50 am

Hi. Last week a parrot flew into our section. After failing so far to find its owner, I am happy to welcome it into our home. It is very tame. After googling on the internet I found a pic that looks like it - a nanday conure. Can someone please tell me what to feed it, and any helpful information. The next big question I have is, can I put it in our aviary with budgies? Their breeding boxes have just gone in. I have 8 budgies.

I would say definitely not. Although my nanday is very tame as well, it is very well capable of harming a smaller sized bird. I would just not take the chance. I feed mine pellets adn mix in some seed about three times a week. I also give him lots of fruit as well as healthy table food. He loves mashed potatoes and peas as well as corn. Although their scream can be piercing to the ears, nandays are one of my favorite. Ive owned one in the past and own one presently who just turned two years old today. Please email me or post any other questions and I'd love to try and help.

There's a link to my blog below that discusses my everyday life with my nanday as well as many common issues that people have with birds.
Good luck with your new find!

Dont underestimate budgies! Dont put any other breed of bird in there while budgies are breeding. They are rather ferocious and would attack and even kill a bird three times their size if they see it as a threat.

I guess it all depends in the bird's personality. I have a macaw, two cockatiels and a parakeet in the same cage (my cage is 6.5ft high x 4 ft wide x 4ft deep. They've been living in harmony for a year now. Nothing has happened. However, my birds don't breed. I think you have to introduce them first. That's what I did with my birds. My macaw is extremely social.

I love the fact that yours live together the way they do. But I would never ever recommend this to anyone!

All a macaw has to do is correct the budgie a bit too harshly for it to be killed. The macaw doesnt even have to mean it.
Not to mention the fact that toys made for a macaw is too big for a budgie, it ight get stuck in there. Budgie toys are too small, a macaw might break it and choke on a little piece.

@zazanomore, lol believe it or not some people still don't have a digital cameras in 2011 lol. I'll take a picture with my phone and see if I can find the USB cable to upload it. My digital camera is broken.

@Kim, I agree with you. Accidents can happen. I guess I'm just glad nothing has happened with my birds. Maybe I should think about getting another cage.. It's just, my parakeet looks so happy inthere.. she has so much more room to roam around and she flies around whenever she wants.. she actually fits through the bars so she really does fly around the house whenever she wants lol. I actually have different size toys for them. I don't really have any toys in which my parakeet can get stuck.

I took these pictures with my phone. Sorry I couldn't get better pictures. Gabby (B&G Macaw) climbs onto the door of the cage as soon as she sees me. She's a glutton for attention.

We have 2 cages in our living area... one for Missy our green cheek conure, and another for "the boys" our 2 budgies.....but they share the same playgym and are out of their cages together for hours at a time. They mostly get along well, although the budgies tend to pick on Missy at times, even though she's significantly larger than them! The poor thing wants to join the boys as they preen each other, and she lowers her head submissively, but they just bite her! Initially she didnt fight back, but she's gotten a bit braver lately and will have a go back now in self defence...so today one of them started trying to get her from behind! Little ratbag!! Missy has also started to become defensive of me, and if one of the boys gets too close or flies and lands on the back of my chair, she'll jump off my shoulder and chase them off. They never get into a full blown fight, and they mainly get along quite well most of the time, but i'd never put them in the same cage together.
