Custom Stainless Steel Cage

Postby lotus15 » Tue Nov 30, 2010 3:10 pm

Lola's new cage has finally arrived!! We had a beautiful, 100% American-made, 304 grade non-magnetic stainless steel cage custom built by Expandable Habitats for her. It is BEAUTIFUL and we are so happy!!

Lola is a Cape Parrot and the dimensions are 42" wide by 24" deep by about 61" tall or so. It has an acrylic sheet on top so that she can hang out above it and not soil it, and also so that curious little budgies who fly atop her cage do not get their little toes bitten :)

We also had a beautiful custom cage cover made. We sent in a photo of Lola and they turned it into an embroidery!!! Sorry for the blurry photo, I accidentally blew on the lens and made it foggy :(

Cool cage... has some great features. The big open door must be great for cleaning it. Looks like the main difference from "standard" or "non custom" made cages for parrots are the little doors for food bowls. I suppose if your bird is very hand tame and you can open the cage door without trouble, these aren't truly necessary. In a way, maybe it's better. A few less doors/lock systems for the bird to play around with and possibly get out, but that's a problem easily solved as well. The one thing I think you're missing is a comfy/rope perch... parrots seem to really like those!

Thanks :) Actually it was my choice not to use the feeder doors-- I have never liked having to keep the bowls in one place as I like them all over the cage and I like to change them up frequently. The cage does actually have side doors though for ease of placing perches and such. Lola is very tame though so replacing food bowls-- even for a stranger-- has never been an issue.

As for the rope perches... I just ordered similar ones and am thinking of putting them inside the cage :) I usually only use them outside because of the toe-trapping potential, but I will give it a try with her inside when they arrive.

Haha... it's true, but well worth it in my opinion :) I've gone through a LOT of cages in the short time that I've had her: a different custom stainless steel cage, a powder-coated cage, even a King's aluminum cage (which I kept-- it's her temporary cage when we visit my parents' house). But this is by far my favorite and truly the palace that she deserves!! :)
