Good Bird Play Gym for Travel?

Postby Kirsten » Tue Jan 11, 2011 12:39 pm

So does anyone know of any good trees or play gyms that are collapsible or easy to take down and put together for travel? I've been looking and haven't found anything along the lines I'm looking for. I've been thinking of designing one myself with the base of a music stand which folds out like a tripod. I think it'd be cool if the branches could kinda fold out like an umbrella. I don't know, it's just a thought at this point. If you guys know anything already similar or something you've had good experience with, let me know!

Can it be a play gym for a table top? I've seen table top playgyms around budgie or cockatiel size with the pieces "out" of them, which I assume could easily be put on and then removed if you wanted to travel with it... they look something like this:

I don't know of any play gym more "portable" than one of these that is widely available.
I don't know your situation specifically but I'm not sure why you need a portable playgym. It might be cheaper and easier for you to buy a somewhat portable cage, hang perches and toys inside or outside or on top, and just leave it open if you want the bird to be able to come in and out of it.

If you are considering designing and building one yourself, just make sure the materials you use are safe for your bird.

Just curious, would this portable play stand be for when you bring your sun conure to work?

I think a travel cage would be great. I've seen the King's Cages travel cages in Micheal's videos, and they seem to be really good quality. http://www.kingscages.com/ProductDetail ... ID=ATT1214

You could place some toys in it. I'm not exactly sure how the situation is going to be like, but if he is allowed to be free-roaming the room, then you could attach a T-perch on top of the travel cage. Something like: http://cgi.ebay.ca/BIRD-PERCH-T-PERCH-T ... 7b67b94354

You can place some foot toys on top of it as well. Does skittles have a favorite stuffed animal? That could be a great toy to bring with you.

There's also: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.j ... Id=2752744

These are typically used for reptiles, but it's safe for birds. Next time I'm in the city, I'm buying one for my night stand, so Einstein has an extra area in my room.

Yup, it's for work. I have to say, that is one hella sexy cage if I do say so myself! This is a work in progress since currently I'll be working in an office the size of a closet with my dad with wires EVERYWHERE. So yeah, that's a concern. However, we are working on trying to convert another area in the church into an area for rebuilding computers (which is one of the responsibilities of this new job) which has much more room. I'm sure she could enjoy watching me from a cage like that! Also, I'm working on getting her to wear a flightsuit. I know they look silly, but it wouldn't be good for her chances to come with me if there was poop all over the church, so it's more of a necessity.

Wonderful suggestions! Thank you!

:macaw:
If you are handy: all you need is a hack saw or similar and a measuring tape or yardstick. Make one from 3/4 or 1 inch pvc white plumbing pipe and fittings. You can design it like two ladders joined together with some more fittings and shapes on the top. Do not glue the fittings (or just one end of them) so you can assemble it and take it apart when you travel. This stuff is real inexpensive and available at any hardware store or home center. They may even cut the peices of conduit for you. I'll try to send a pic of one soon.
Hope this helps, pirategene and tambo
