can my budgie sleep outside of the cage?

Postby waika94 » Thu Jan 13, 2011 2:56 am

I was just wondering if I could let my budge sleep outside of the cage or if he must be covered throughout the night. If you know, please tell me. Thanks :)

if he has a cage why would you want him to sleep outside his cage? i think he would be more comfortable sleeping in his cage, birds tend to sleep in the same spot or have a few favored spots to sleep, even in there cage.

If you have a safe bird room that your bird is contained in, that is dark for at least nine hours, you wouldn't necessarily need to lock him in his cage, but very few of us have a setup like that -- and he might choose to sleep in the cage anyway! Most birds like a perch that is high up in a corner to sleep on because it feels protected (then there are wierdos like GCCs that like to sleep on their backs, but that's a whole 'nother deal). If the perch is at a normal height in a big room, I would guess your budgie loves it during the day but would feel more secure in the cage at night.

Covering a cage is to make it darker and quieter. It isn't necessary to cover if the cage is located in a room that isn't used at night and has good drapes or blinds. Letting a bird, flighted or otherwise, wander the house unsupervised is IMO dangerous even if you have a well bird-proofed house and no other pets or humans.

If it were me i'd have my bird sleep in it's cage, if for no other reason other than it have it's safe place where it's comfortable when i need to cage it.

My budgies see their cage as a safe zone. Actually, they see ALL cages as a safe zone. They are repeat offenders for trespassing in Einsteins AND the dog's cage. The funny thing about the dog's cage though, is that the spacing is so big, that they walk through the bars.

At night when me and Einstein are having our night time cuddles, he'll sometimes fly over to his cage and go in by himself and start to go to sleep.

I think it's best for them to have their own safe spot to sleep at night.
