Scotty and Scooter cage setup

Postby entrancedbymyGCC » Mon Jan 17, 2011 6:44 pm

Hi all,

There was some interest in how we had Scotty's cage set up from an earlier thread, so I took some snaps today. Without setting up lighting and getting out the good camera, it wasn't easy to get really good shots, but I uploaded what I captured to Photobucket. I did Scooter's as well for good measure.

cool set ups :) im currently ordering Jango a different cage. his one he has is big enough to be an aviary so im going to set it out on the deck for him to get some sun during the day i need 2 people to lift it down the stairs so its not an easy job to do it daily. im ordering him a cage that is the same dimensions but its in a square so hes not losing space its just different and will fit in my room a bit better too. i should get it in 2 weeks i have $100 more to pay off and i wont be able to resit ill need an extra $50-80 for new cage supplies =p

Wow, Scotty is a LOOKER!!! I don't think I had ever seen photos before!!! Gorgeous!!!

That's so funny that you and Michael have the aluminum cages for your Capes :) I actually also have one for Lola (my Cape) as her temp cage when we are visiting the parents.

As for the perch scenario: I think that something that really helps me is NOT using the perches that run end to end (I see that you use the 3 that came with the cage I believe?). I found that because there is so much overlap because of them, it was pretty much impossible not to have poop-covered perches. I try to use carefully staggered perches that are all single-ended instead. Maybe that would help?

Scotty says "thank you" for the compliment!

You are probably right about the full length perches, but my husband would be loathe to waste them, so they are there to stay for a while. I also wish there was more variable size perch surface in there. We got that great java wood perch, but he rarely uses it. He does have a java tree to hang out on, though.

The place we got Scotty from is a King's dealer, and of the cages they had available to send home with him, that one was the most suitable. So we accidentally wound up with much the same setup as Michael. It's not a bad cage. There are things I'd change, but plenty of things I wouldn't.

Guess I should post pictures more often. Since Scotty is technically Bill's bird, and he thinks I'm the hen of his dreams (Scotty, not Bill. Well maybe Bill, too.) I try to handle him minimally and I don't take pics of him as often as I do Scooter. I actually am very fond of him and think he is very cool, but he bites Bill when he's been spending time with me. Actually, I should do a Scotty update on Parrot Tales -- we've figured out a lot about him, but he's kind of a complex character. Very, very smart! But I digress.

I really like the cage as well. I found it for an incredible deal and couldn't pass it up-- that's how it became the "temp" cage. I really like the drilled construction and the shelf underneath is great!

That's so interesting about Scotty. Between you and your husband, who does the feeding / cleaning for Scotty? That's really great that he's so interested in birds enough to actually want one of his own. I can't tell you how many women I know who *wish* their husbands / significant others would take even a passing interest!!!!

He got me into birds! He's the one with all the experience. We held off for years because we figured we'd have Sake, who had been his bird that went to stay with his mother while he was out of the country for a couple of years, but he bonded to Harriet like glue. Unfortunately, Sake predeceased her by mere months. So when we'd recovered from all of that, we started thinking about getting a bird and here we are.

As you guessed, I'm the main cleaner and feeder, although Bill does the evening sprouts if he's home before me, and he does everything if I'm out of town and he isn't. He is Scotty's source of free nuts (ones he doesn't have to forage for) and his usual route to out of cage time. Although he left early this morning and I'm home sick, so Scotty is currently perched on the back of my office chair.

We think he came with an anti-male bias. His best friend at the bird store was a woman, she loved him to pieces (she cried when we took him home, but she had six birds at home already and he'd been there two years -- we think), and the husband of the owner who is the main groomer there, while not downright mean, could best be described as extremely perfunctory. At first Scotty would not let Bill even pet him behind the neck, whereas he'd let me touch him pretty much anywhere.
