Bigger IS Better

Postby zazanomore » Wed Jan 26, 2011 9:03 pm

So, I got my two new bird cages. I am so pleased with them! Very good quality, easy to assemble, and very nice looking. I've only had the one assembled so far. As I need my step fathers help assembling it.

Einstein, who has the least space of my birds, is now living in his new flight cage. He was really hesitant at first, but after a few hours, I saw that it really excited him. I have spread all the toys and perches from his old cage, and spread them out throughout his cage. There is plenty of room, and I will probably be buying more perches in the next month.

In his old cage, Einstein stuck to usually a few places. But ever since I've put him in his new cage, he's been motoring all over the cage. Some of the perches he rarely used before, he is now trying out. He now has four food containers, and I had spotted him going from one feeder to the other, back and forth, just because he could.

He's even swinging on his swing! He had never really liked his swing before, but now I catch him trying to jump on it.

It makes me really happy to see him so active in his cage. I think I will feel better leaving him during the day, now that he has so much room.

If any of you ever gets the money or means to buy a bigger cage, do it! It is so much more beneficial for your bird!

Happy Einstein is enjoying his new cage :)

However...Bigger is only better when the bar spacing is appropriate.

And I've met some birds that were moved to bigger cages and did not enjoy them and were happier going in their old cages. While I also advocate about getting the biggest safest cage you can for your birds, we need to keep in mind their personal preferences :)

When picking out cages, I made sure to look at the bar spacing of every cage. I began looking at the normal playtop cages, but I found that they all had really big bar spacings. And the cages that did have appropriate bar spacings, they seemed to be too small.

This type of cage is perfect for smaller birds. It's bar spacing is 0.47", so it is below the maximum bar spacing for both budgies and cockatiels.

So my stepdad was building the second cage tonight, and of course he breaks two of the wheels. So, for now, some books are holding up Bonnie and Clyde's new cage (don't worry, I haven't moved them in yet). Anyways, here's some pictures of The new flight cages.
