What Should I Get For A New Cage??

Postby CheekyandMalolo » Tue Feb 15, 2011 5:06 am

I've just started to notice that my cage is starting to age, there's a few spots in the powder coating that's starting to rub off and it's getting me a little concerned. There's not much, and I'm pretty sure It's only on the outside, but still I think it'll be time to find a new one soon. Considering I bought it off Ebay for $80 2 years ago, I'm pretty happy with it :)

Here is the big cage at mum and dad's house which is pretty much awesome.

And my cage at the OH's house with the conures in it, is your traditional dome top cage, like this one, minus the skirt and tray at the bottom. And the door is a pull down one that unfortunately doesn't go too far up the height of the cage.

OH likes the look of a round cage, however I don't think they're quite big enough. I would like another dome top, or perhaps a corner cage, they look quite nice!
Swing out feeders, a higher door, a skirt and tray are all features that I'd like to have in the new cage.

So, get your thinking caps on peoples!

What type of parrot is this for? What size/bar spacing are you looking for?

It's for 2 GGC's. Not sure what size, what is a good size for 2 GCCs? I want to get them a cage that's quite large, as they tend to spend a decent chunk of the day in there.
Bar spacing needs to be 1 - 1.5cms.

I think a flight cage is always a great cage for GCCs. The dome top cage by Avian Adventures-- be careful as they are notorious for having parts of the cages with larger bar spacing than listed, which may pose a safety issue for your guys. I personally am not a fan of split level cages because it seems to me like they'd prefer to be in the higher up part, but that's a personal preference.

Our birds quite like the split level cage actually, the spend the daytime in the top part, but at night the Tiel's sleep in the bottom level, and if any of them feel crowded they go down there to hide a bit.

At those stage we're thinking of this cage:

Can anyone see any problems it may pose?

I just got my cages off of Ebay for $99.99 and they're nice. I got the same size for my GCC and my budgies. It's big enough that I could probably add another GCC in it if I really wanted to.

I found this beautiful cage on Ebay while I was looking at one for my boyfriend (for a bird he wants to get, not him! ..although that could be a possibility ;) ..)

I like the corner cages, too, but they always seem so short to me. I've never seen one in person, only in pictures, so that may be why.

I don't think a cage could ever be too big for a bird. When I buy my cages, I buy the biggest one I can afford with the appropriate bar spacing. My birds don't spend a lot of time in their cages, so I make sure to always build them a playgym on top of it.

Just a comment...be VERY careful when buying a cage off EBAY, or any used cages. There is a HUGE black market for parrot cages out there. There is actually a group advocating for someone to block the import of cages from china because of this.

These black market cages look exactly like the good ones. Except for the fact that they're made with lead-based paint.

Woman I learned this from has a friend who bought a gorgeous cage off of Kijiji. Said gorgeous cage ended up killing her scarlet macaw.

Bar spacing wise...I've found that it is not as strict as people like to say. For instance, the bar spacing for the cage I have my GCC in, is supposedly way too big for a GCC. 1 inch (measured from the outside either bar). Before I bought it, I had the woman selling it pull out a GCC and hold his head against the bars. It was far too big to fit, and the GCC was smaller than mine. I also tested with my own boy; had him try to eat seeds through the bars. He couldn't get his head through it.

My GCC also has no problems what so ever in climbing up and down the vertical bars
Wild animals are called 'wild' for a reason. Keep them that way. Adopt your pets, or buy them from a certified breeder.
