Which breed of parrot for aviary?

Postby type.rst » Fri Apr 01, 2011 2:25 pm

Hello guys i have been keeping budgies and cockatiels for a long time. Now im in the process of building an aviary in my garden which will be 13ft x 8ft wide. flight area will be 9ft x 8ft and speeping quarters will be 6ft x 4ft.

Originally the aviary was going to be for cockateils and budgies. But now i fancy a change and would like to know my options. I am from the UK and the weather here can get quite cold in the winter. I know budgies and cockatiels would cope well. I need a kind of parrot will will breed sucessfully in an aviary setup. i was thinking of a few pairs of ringneck parrots or maybe green cheek conures.

I have just started looking into this so if you people can please tell me of any parrots which:

1. would cope with UK weather

2. would breed sucessfully alongside a dozen of other parrots of the same kind.

Thank you for your help.

How about quakers? They tolerate a wider spectrum of temperatures compared to many other parrots.

I would also say lories and lorikeets, especially the Goldie's Lorikeet because they're small and very pretty. I'm not too sure about the weather thing though.

I know Quakers defintely can stand colder temperatures. We have a flock of them living outside in NY and it gets VERY cold here!!

Yeah but they still depend on access to active heating systems. They generally build their communal nests on electric transformers.
