How do your birds sleep?

Postby CheekyandMalolo » Tue Apr 12, 2011 10:51 pm

I've been thinking a bit about how our GCC's sleep. They have a tent in their cage, which you might ever so often find them in, but we've only seen them in there 2-3 times in 4 months. Took them 3 months just to find the thing! They also don't do the typical conure thing of sleeping on their backs. They prefer to sleep like this:

So ... how do your birds sleep? All our Australian parrots just do the normal thing of fluffing themselves down on the perch with their head turned around.

Find their favorite perch, Einstein loves his textured perch, and the budgies share the top of their rope swing. They fluff up and sleep. Pretty normal.

Maybe mine are the only weirdos who prefer to hang from the roof or lay on each other.
We did find Rory on his back on the bottom of the cage one day, gave us all just a little bit of a heart attack!!

Cheney Bird (GCC) sleeps in his homemade hammock. It seems to be his preferred way to sleep, but I have caught him sleeping while hanging from the side of the cage. He's only done that a couple of times.

No Name and Pigpen (budgies) sleep on their favorite swing, a very tiny pedi-swing that barely fits the two of them anymore. They fluff themselves up, turn their heads around, and they go to sleep. I have also caught Pigpen sleeping while hanging from the side of the cage, but never No Name.

All of ours, big and small, do the puffy thing on the perch. Once in a while Pickle (Hahn's) will sleep inside his box, but not so much anymore. Arthur, my Jardines, likes to sleep crouched high up in the corner of his cage where I have a rope perch for him.

You know those stuffed olympic toy backpack chains(?) for Canada? That is Spice's favourite toy, she'll climb on Sumi(the stuffed animal)'s head and cling on to it while she sleeps. Looks uncomfortable in my opinion but she likes it! Apple sleeps like a normal birdie, on a perch.

We have a quaker at the rescue who has one of those furry huggy tents and he loves to sleep squashed between the tent and the cage, its very odd.

Kika and Guus will fluff up on their fav perch and fall asleep.
Many of the birds in the outside aviaries hang onto the mesh while sleeping. Im not exactly happy with that, since cats can just pluck them off the wire. But luckily that hasnt happened yet.
Kika: Senegal Parrot.
Guus: Cockatiel, Yellowcheek, cinnamon, pearl, pied.

All of them sleep similar, they go to their favorite perch or toy, fluff up and sleep. Budgies sometimes sleep together: Mango with Plum and Coconut with Blueberry. Chico is by herself in her cage.
Only Mango- my very first budgie- is quietly singing for them for good night even when it's completely quiet in my place. But he is completely weird one ;) Vets thinks that in a previous place he didn't have a good care and peace and quiet even at night...

My apartment is never completely quiet and I don't think it affects my birds. There's a fire department a few buildings down from mine and there are sirens all night. I also have a bad habit of falling asleep with the television on. My birds all quiet down around 7 p.m. when they know it's bed time.
