Let's Talk Poop.

Postby kaylayuh » Thu Apr 14, 2011 9:14 am

I'm sure we all know by now that birds have a tendency to poop everywhere. Short of covering every surface with newspaper or plastic, it's pretty much a given that eventually we'll get poop on our carpet, tile, wood, or what-have-you. So, what is your tried and true method for removing it?

A little information:

I rent an apartment with carpeting in the living area where the birds are.
I use Poop Off for cage cleaning and have tried it on the carpet. It changed the color of the piece of carpeting I tried.
I'm considering using Resolve carpet cleaner, but I haven't been able to find if this is safe.

Right now, the birds are pretty good about going to their cage to poop. Unfortunately, Cheney Bird has a new habit of sitting on the cage door and thus pooping on my floor. I've been just wiping it up with paper towels and blotting it with water. Depending on what he eats, the color changes to an obnoxiously bright green, or if eating pellets, whatever pellet color he's chosen for that day. This makes it infinitely harder to remove it.

Honestly? I've found that water and a teeny bit of dish soap does the trick just great. But only a teensy bit of soap, otherwise the bubbles and soap are impossible to rinse out.

I have a bottle of Nature's Miracles. Worked great for hedgehog poop, cat poop/urine, etc.
For the most part, my birds' poop is served in solid nuggets that can be picked up with no leftover trace.

That's what I love about budgies. Their clean up is SO much easier! The GCC's poop splatters and is much messier.

i put towels around martys cage and his play stand and just wash them when their full, it catches any dropped food or poop, i shake it out into his cage or the garbage can. if it gets on the floor i use a mop because i have tile floors, but when he poops on the couch i just use water and a bit of soap and its not noticeable ;) if you wipe it up right away its a lot easier but when it dries i have to scrub a lot haha. do your birds poop on you? because i hold marty constantly when im home because thats what he likes and he has never poop on me or my bed. maybe his old owner trained him, which i doubt but who knows? :)

Cheney Bird hasn't pooped on me, but has on the bed. Pigpen and No Name have both pooped on me.

The real issue is that Cheney Bird broke out of his cage before I was awake this morning and pooped on the floor. It was a really bright green color (probably the peas he had last night!) and when I wiped it up, it kind of stained the carpet. I rent and I'd like my security deposit back when I move out, lol. So I want to make sure I can clean it without Poop Off in the future.

I like the Poop-off wipes, they aren't too saturated and they have a strong and slightly abrasive texture. That might get it out of the carpet without staining. I also sometimes use a carpet cleaning machine with a mix of the carpet detergent and Nature's Miracle. I wouldn't use it in the room with the birds present, although I suspect its fairly benign. Works great for otherwise intractible cat stains. We mostly don't have the birds over carpet as it turns out. Only the bedroom hall and two of the bedrooms are carpeted in our house.

I might have something what could help you,
We had bunny for about 9-10 years(both me and vets lost the track). That's not important now. What I try to show you, is what you can buy in some Menard's or Home Depot and put under cages- safe for birds, carpet and easy to clean. It cost about $11-$20 and that's it!
I have no idea how to name that think(faked wall?), but with our Kubus bunny it safed my carpet. Just take a look:

He was in the cage, and around was fence, so he could have his space. That "white titles" in the floor is what I call faked wall(wrr, my English). If you take a good look, you'll see the black standing- the same we use now and before for budgies. Yes, they was above him!

And here's some special picture to show you how messy and poppy he was. Behind the fence is still the same carpet:

We removed that thing after Kubus passed away from liver- it was his age. Budgies poo didn't stick to the carpet, but if I'll have the same situation as you with Chico, I do the same think. Buy that something I named "faked wall", choose the color, you can cut it how log you want it to be and simple put on the carpet under the birds cages. Easy to clean, as a regular floor and carpet is safe!

I tried the tiny bit of soap in water and it worked wonders. I decided I'd mix it up in a spare bottle I had, so now I have it on hand. I figure I'll probably need it with Cheney Bird playing jail break from his cage.

I thought about linoleum, but I don't think I'd like the way it looks. The area it would be in would have to take about 1/4 of the living space we share, so I'm a bit hesistant about that. If he keeps doing this though, I'll definitely have to give it a try.
