I really wish I could, but I have to live in residence this year and the vast majority of universities don't allow pets other than fish. Or rocks. ;P My university is a 20 hour drive from where I live, in a province I have yet to visit, so until I know the area, taking them with me is probably not going to work out. I'm going to visit the campus next weekend, so I could ask then, but I seriously doubt they'd allow birds.

I'm thinking about renting an apartment in second year instead of residence, but transportation (the university is outside the city limits a bit) and finances are all issues I have to take into account for that path. That, and I already put a $700 non-refundable deposit on my res so... yeah. :| After this year when I know the area and my options are a little clearer I'll be able to make a more well informed choice. *sigh*

I'm debating about whether I should move the budgies into my room. They're currently in the living room, which is pretty high-traffic so they're exposed to people. but I worry about letting them out of the cage anytime soon as the living room is large and connected to our kitchen which is a safety hazard. After weeks of working with them, they still don't trust me and I don't have a lot of time to spend with them right now between school, work and homework. I spend a lot of time in my room doing homework, among other things so they'd be near me far more often.

Not to mention, I'd be able to put their cage up against a solid wall, which I know gives a lot of birds a better sense of security. Our living room is primarily windows with very little solid wallspace. What wallspace we have in the living room is taken up by things that can't really be moved, like the TV and the fireplace. Hard to build trust if they don't feel safe.

And there'd be a bit more noise control. My parents don't complain, but they've mentioned that they are pretty noisy. My little brother frequently tells them to hush, which I consistently remind him won't work.

The mess is something I'd worry about a bit more. Their feathers and seed husks fly everywhere and there's a carpet in my room. I could just get the vacuum out (they don't seem afraid of it) so that wouldn't be too much of a problem. I would like to find a seed guard to help control the mess though.

I also have a window. It's not covered by curtains which could be a safety hazard if I let them out. I'll have to ask Mom if she can give me an old sheet to cover them with for now. They'd also have to get used to my alarm clock. :|

So I'd like some input. Would I be better off moving them to my room, which is a bit more of a quiet and controlled environment? Or is it better to leave them where they are?

I think your room would be a good place, you could give them more out of cage time in a controlled, safe environment. I think training would be easier as well. As for the mess, try a seed skirt or something similar. Those are specifically made to contain the mess inside the cage.

Thanks for the advice, GlassOnion. I moved them to my room today and once they've adjusted to the change in scenery I'll be able to start letting them come out. :)

They seem to be doing better in my room now... asides from waking me up at 5:45 every morning. ;) Since I moved them out of the living room they've been a lot quieter during the day with only a few loud bursts. :)

Ollie must have had a night-fright or something though, 'cause I woke up and found he'd broken a blood feather. Thankfully it had stopped bleeding when I discovered it, though his wing has a nasty stain. I'm starting to think they'll never get over their chronic fearfulness though. They have gotten a lot better lately, but they aren't adjusting as well as I'd hoped. If I so much as stand up near them they freak out.

Before they go to their new home I'm going to try and talk with their new owner about getting them a bigger cage. The one they're in is about 17 x 13 x 30 (estimating the height, as I could barely measure around the bottom without them startling), but they only use the top half. They'll be fine where they are for now, but once they're permanently settled they'll need more space. Quite simply, they're too easily frightened to be safely let out of their cage. :(

My aunt's friend will be taking them for me. He doesn't have any family and is very lonely at home so I couldn't deny him the companionship, especially since I'm not in a position to keep them right now. It would be better for them to stay with him permanently anyway; I won't subject them to the stress of moving back and forth between owners for the next four years.

I'll definitely get a permanent companion bird after university though. These guys have been a joy to watch and I'm glad I was able to help them. :)
