AVIARIES

Postby Fallen_Parakeet » Wed Jun 08, 2011 8:37 pm

Over the summer I want to build a aviary for my pet bird. I want it big enough to hold a african grey, so that way I can buy one later on. Do you guys have any ideas, sugggestions, blueprints, or anything like that? Untill I get an :gray: I will put my :budgie: inside of it. How tall/wide should I make it? (P.s. it is going to be inside because I don't trust my dog and my neighboors cats behind out their with it..)
-Thanks

You do realize even a small walk in area will cost at least $500-$1000 in materials (best case scenario and far from ideal)? Also for a budgie, the wire spacing would have to be really fine so it may cost even more. You're likely to find that the cost of buying a $1000-$2000 manufactured aviary is barely more than making one, except that it may take months to build if done properly. The manufactured one would be welded whereas a homemade one would depend on wire ties, clips, or screws and be less durable. The manufactured ones are ready powder coated whereas a homemade one would require stainless steel wire ($3000+ in materials) or to be taken to a powder coating facility which is costly as well.

If you're only looking into an aviary for indoor rather than outdoor use, if you have the time, you can save a ton of money by just getting a nice cage and then giving the parrots a lot of supervised out of cage indoor flight time.

Well I'm now thinking outdoor, I have the space for it and it wouldnt be for a bugie, for a larger bird. Still not sure yet..

No it's going to be an indoors one. What type of material is safe for parakeets?

Stainless steel with spacing of less than half inch or steel with powder coating. Either way, expect to spend at least $1000 in materials and a week in labor for a not so big aviary.
