How DO you clean a wooden playstand like mine?

Postby Kirsten » Wed Jun 22, 2011 8:05 am

So I have this playstand for Skittles that resembles this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/Medium-Parrot-Bird-Gym-Play-Stand-toy-cage-perch-/110434529763?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19b66931e3

As you can see, it has like, those little nooks and crannies for all sorts of things to get caked into. In my case, these areas are becoming caked with peanut butter and poop. It's getting kinda gross and even Poop-Off isn't really getting the job done. Does anyone have any bird-safe remedies for this situation? Even tools or tips to help get the gunk out would be nice.

What I use is a mixture of half water, half white vinegar.

I've got a bunch of natural wood perches, and my birds always seem to constantly poop on them, no matter how I position them.

I keep the mixture in a spray bottle, and I wet the surface with it. The poop usually comes right off.

And a bonus, vinegar also disinfects!

Should I be using like a toothbrush or something to get it off instead of a towel?

If it is really bad, first use the sandpaper (outside). Then use a toothbrush or scrub brush with a viniger solution.

If it's bark-y, I'd go with a bristle brush. You might want to take it outside on a sunny day and use the hose, liquid dish detergent and an scrub brush. Let it dry thoroughly in the sun.

I find poop-off does quite well on a smooth wood surface. Especially if the poop is fairly fresh.

Don't use bleach or other non-bird-safe disinfectants on wood. For one thing, they soak into the wood and are hard to get to evaporate completely and for another they are only really effective on smooth, non-porous, non-organic surfaces anyway. The best bet for disinfecting wood is to bake it in an oven.

An old, fairly blunt chisel does the job nicely for those tricky spots

Try to smooth out the grooves you make while cleaning. They are future poop collectors

Also consider a steam cleaner. We have this one by McCullugh:

Kind of pricey, yes, but it kills bacteria in places where even vinegar solutions have a hard time reaching.
