Perches!

Postby parrotlover » Tue Jul 19, 2011 3:58 pm

Hey I'm thinking of saveing some money when getting my Parakeet. So I've decided why not make some homemade perches?! :P BUT I'm not sure what to look for. YES I do know that I will have to 'bake the branches in order for them to be parrot safe. Is there anything else I should do to the wood? :)

Make sure the perch is made out of bird safe wood and that there are no pesticides on it.

Honestly? It's alot simpler to go to a store and get them. I went to a bird store and petsmart and my perchs cost between $1.99 and $5.99.

I would avoid wooden dowels as much as possible, they are too smooth and cause cramps and joint problems in birdie feet. Natural branches/ pedicure perches/ rope perches are good

I'm makeing ym own perches and I got the right wood and the materials. Now should I bake the wood in the oven to kill the paracites if it has any. Also I should look for cracks and what not also right?

Yeay! lol Yea I've done it before I baked the bark and some of the wood for my snakes tank. Also most of the wood in Louisiana has ALOT of bark on it. Like Oak and Hackberry. I have ALOT of Hackberry and good bit of Oak. I have another tree and the wood is Really smooth and not many cracks. So should I get one of the branches that have alot of areas where it had stems so that it doesn't sit on the same kind of wood that is smooth bt different widths?... :?
