Don't think it's stainless. Chrome plated most likely. I doubt they'd be using unsafe metals on carriers meant even for other kinds of pets. If you are worried, you can double check with the manufacturer. I have another article on my blog about modifying the bigger version of this one as a double/triple carrier if you own multiple parrots.

Zinc indeed is not safe for parrots. But by the looks of the carrier bars, I'm pretty certain it is chrome plated which is safe. If you suspect it of being zinc coated, you can scrub it with vinegar to remove lose zinc (that's how breeders use cheaper galvanized steel mesh for making aviaries despite the zinc).

I actually found a small animal cage at my local pet store that worked perfectly as a carrier for my Maroon Bellied Conure. I will just need to cut a perch to fit properly.

No need to go to a hardware store. Just break out one of your bird toys and look at the chain. If it's a shiny metallic look, it is nickle or chrome plated. That isn't the best but it is bird safe. Stainless steel is the best for durability and safety but it's quite costly. When toys are mounted on a wire, it is often stainless steel, but the chains are plated. The bells are usually chrome or nickle plated as well. Indoors it does just fine and all the wood will long be destroyed before the chains go bad. The one place it sucks is outdoors. I have a bunch of bird toys and perches hung outside for over a year and the bells/chains are rusted because the chrome plating has worn off and exposed the underlying steel. Not dangerous to the birds really. Just looks bad and will break eventually. I'll have those thrown out and replaced before the steel linkages start breaking from corrosion.
