Am I expecting too much? --- Building an Indoor Aviary

Postby CinnamonParrots » Sun Sep 25, 2011 1:19 am

I would just like to get some suggestions/comments/concerns about POSSIBLY building an indoor aviary. I've noticed that most likely, the cost of building my own aviary would be the same as buying a commercially made aviary. However, I don't plan on building a massive aviary --- not yet anyways  Rather, I currently own about 5 cages, and at one point, I had about 10 cages for 3 little birds. Yes, 3 birds! Only b/c no cage seemed "right"!

Now, it's not just about cleanliness, but rather dimensions. Currently, I have 2 small parrot cages propped up on their stands, heavy duty cages if I might add, in the middle of my living room. Now, I feel like it would be much more efficient space wise to build an "aviary" for my conure, lovebird and budgie so that I can use the entire space their cages are taking up. From floor to ceiling (well almost). Is that an unreasonable way of thinking? Especially since I am considering a full on metal cage, (stainless steel probably will be too expensive) without those home made wood frames if I can avoid it.

I guess what I am trying to say is that I would like to know where breeders of large macaws, as well as flocks of conures -- find these cages! whether they were pre-built or whether there is a reliable place to find materials to possibly build a small aviary in my living room! I also remember going to an aviary exhibit, or even at the zoo, where they have aviaries that are almost kennel like with proper bar spacings, that are sometimes small, and sometimes massive.

Even more difficult, is whether or not I may have access to these materials in Canada, as I'm sure it's probably more expensive here...lol

What to do.... what to do...!

Wow thanks! This guy is indeed smart for using materials normally used for kennels as the main cage structure for his cage! I wonder how I can go about that but scale it down..he makes an excellent point about wideness which I like, but if I did find bar spacings that were about .5 inches, I'd like to build a cage kind of like this one: hope the link works, it was a cage someone wanted to sell http://ontario.kijiji.ca/c-pets-birds-f ...
