To disinfect a cage I wash the whole thing down with warm soapy water and get a soft brush on the bars otherwise its easy to miss stuff, you will need to do it outside if possible but if not cover everything up well because it does create a spray. This needs doing because disinfectant doesn't work effeciantly if there is any organic debris on the surface.

I allow the cage to dry fully before I disinfect, I don't think this is necessary but it makes me feel better to do so lol.

When I disinfect I spray the whole cage down from the inside and outside to try to avoid missing any areas. I let it dry and do it a second time just to be sure.

I'm only this thorough with second hand cages or if my birds are sick, usually its a quick wash with warm soapy water, get the worst of with a towel then disinfect.

It is important not to rinse the disinfectant off (if you need to) straight away, it needs time to work properly. I'm not sure what the minimum time to leave it on is, I would guess at about 20 mins but I usually wait an hour or so. Its like putting boiling water over something and calling it sterilized, usually it needs a minimum of 10-20 minutes constant boiling to be properly sterilized.

Thanks for the tips!

What kind of disinfectant do you use, household bleach or something else?

I use F10 its designed for use with birds and other pets. It is expensive but it lasts an absolute age and it keeps really well. Personally I wouldn't risk using bleach incase I didnt rinse it all off properly.

Just a young parrot novice looking to learn more. Considering getting a small parrot! (perhaps a budgie, lovebird, or conure!)

The designer bird cages are pretty, sure, but wouldn't the bird just chew the wood off? whether it is in or out of the cage?

i prefer cage companies that are trying to make safer, practical cages over the ones trying to make cages that look "pretty".
also, this style of cage might even entice people who want a "unique" themed living, bedroom, e.c.t into buying a bird just to complete the decor.

But i will say that the cages in the link are better than most decorative cages i have seen, like the ones that look like some Indian buildings.
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands.

And just like that, I realize I have something new to save up for.

All Skittles has is a cage way smaller than this. I've always felt he needs a bigger cage to frolic around in while I'm trying to game or do homework.

I know with cages that birds sleep in that they are supposed to be away from windows, somewhere where the bird feels safe, but is it okay to put a flight cage next to a window if you just use it as a day cage? I think a second cage in the living room is overdue anyway.

Cages in front of windows should be put in a way so that part of the cage is behind the wall too. That way the parrot can hide from something outside if it wants but also has shade from the sun.
