To cover or not to cover - that is the question

Postby Eyesrmosaics » Tue Nov 08, 2011 3:00 am

Hi, I'm a new Amazon owner and I have a question. Tori's cage is in the living room. I work 3rd shift in the same room. I have Tori covered with a light sheet. Does she need more substantial cover or should I roll her cage to a darker part of the house? She is quiet but I do sometimes hear her in her cage. I know they need a good 10-12 hours of sleep. Any advice? Thanks!

:amazon: Rambo takes naps in the daytime with the sun shining. He is also a midnight eater and needs a little light to find his way around. I keep a nightlight for my kids.

You seem to be doing fine. He is probably on your schedule anyway.

With Ladu, my :greycockatiel: , I cover the back and sides and leave a gap at the front because Ladu, like Rambo, is also a midnight eater and he needs to see to eat. I also leave a nightlight on because he can't sleep when it is completely dark, he is afraid of the dark

I have had a night light all my life. As a child to keep the scaries away. As an adult - when I open my eyes I want to see. All but Myrtle are night time eaters. It gets messy if they can't see the food they are after. Myrtle doesn't take naps when the others do so she sleeps through the night in a paper bag.

If you cover, make sure to leave part uncovered so they can get enough ventilation and so it doesn't get too hot in the cage.

Not to revive a semi-lifeless thread, but...

I've covered Lynyrd since I got him two days ago, but now when I move the sheet to cover the back of his cage again... not the whole cage while I'm still up, he got extremely angry and started fretting around his cage.

Should I just leave him uncovered? And will that cause problems later?

I usually cover the cage as to 'show' that it's night-night time.

Lynyrd is 9 years old, and just arrived 2 days ago from some lady that had him for 7 years and wantd to 'release' him into the wild.

I keep one small corner section of the cage covered 24/7, its their safe place in the cage where they can go if they want to nap or sleep. I have never had any issues with leaving it that way.
As for telling them its night time, I just turn of the lights and they climb to their corner to sleep ;), it isnt harder than that. We do have a night light though, a small ghost shining in blueish from IKEA thats intended for children, which we got since Stitch had a night fright once and couldnt find his way back up (fortunatly I heard it and woke up to help him). The light works brilliantly, even if it hasnt been needed a single time since we got it.

Yes I think giving them the option is nice. Sparky is *mostly* covered at night with a cotton sheet. He sleeps in the dining room away from the lounge as we are up till around 11 and I don't think he wants to be!
