Settling into a cage

Postby Crimson_Shadows » Mon Jan 02, 2012 5:55 am

Hi, i will soon be buying a budgie and was wandering, for it's first day in the cage, should i leave it covered so it isnt frightened by activity in the room whilst settling in, or would it be better to allow the bird to observe its new suroundings? In the past i have left new birds uncovered, but they were brought home in the afternoon and the cage in my bedroom. This time the bird will arrive home around midday and the cage will be in our living room, which is a more active and used area. Please help. I just want to ensure my new birdie isnt too stressed out on its first day in my home.
RIP Bo. your epicness lives on in all budgies :D

You did not say where you were getting your bird. If it comes from a pet shop or breeder it is used to activity. Covering it would be isolation and stressful. Mine are put in the most active part of the house to give them something to watch, listen and think about while they are going through there climetization. It sort of distracts them from what they have left behind.

I have often read that it is best to show your bird what the rest of its life will be like from day 1. So if you have a really busy, noisy house, it is best for it to be put in the busiest part of the house so it can become accustomed to that. If you put it all alone in a quiet bedroom and let it get settled there, then moved it into the living room, it would have to get adjusted all over again.
