Stitch and Leroys new place

Postby cml » Sat Jan 28, 2012 1:54 pm

Some of you might remember that I intended to build an indoor aviary, and now that we got 2 parrots I finally got it done. Its huge, 6' x 5 1/2' x 3 ', and I think they will like it very much, once they get along well enough to move in together. Until then they will continue to live in their old separate cages.

It is made of wood (with a plastic floor, I dont know if thats visible in the pictures below) but I dont think that will be an issue, niether of our parrots are destructive, they prefer to play with softer things like rope or the like than wood. Its got one big door on the left, and the right bottom is a large cleaning hatch to make it easier to clean.

Total cost of the cage/aviary, around 160-180$ give or take =). But it did take a lot of time, many many hours, to build.

neat little aviary, im still in the drawing process of my new cage, I inted to use an already existing cage to take the bars from but still need to make a furniture to set it on and the back of the cage (since that will not be bars) hopefully i'll be done calculating what materials I need and how much to be able to buy the 2"x2"s next weekend and start building it... I too will make the main structure of wood, at first I was planning on welding it all, while the welding wouldnt be a problem the powdercoating is quite costly... atleast over here, the powedercoating of the peices alone would be about the same cost as a finnished cage about the same size as your aviary... something that made me reconsider and go for wood, if he ever gets destructive I either have to change the wood for metall then or i change the wooden parts he has destroyed...

And I am sure your lil fellas will enjoy their new aviary.

Wow, that's a beautiful aviary!
Did you build this by your own design or did you go by someone's blueprint?
Really amazing job!

It looks fantastic! But.. Um..... Aren't you worried they're gonna destroy the whole thing in a week? Birds chew on pine for fun.... Wood = destructible..

Mine dont chew on wood that much, they prefer softer toys. Stitch can go as far as balsa wood ^^. We`ll see how long the cage survives, hopefully it will be a long time :-D.

The design is my own, I had a basic idea, then I improvised as I went along. So there is no blueprint ;).
