I looked at the 2 bulbs you linked and they were around the same price as the FeatherBrite bulbs so I guess I'm confused when you say those are too expensive? Do you mean the fixtures? If so, you could buy your own swag light/floor lamp at a lower price and just buy the FeatherBrite bulb.

You don't want a reptile bulb for a bird.

I looked into reptile lights and understand why they are not suitable for birds.

And yes, it is the price of the Feather Brite fixtures, not the bulbs, that are a little to expensive for me. Plus, I don't know how much shipping would be to Canada. I emailed Feather Brite about it, but am still waiting for a response. Do you think the clamp light fixtures that are designed for reptile lights would work with the Feather Brite bulb? I have found a couple at some pet stores that are significantly more affordable.
I was thinking one like this http://www.exo-terra.com/en/products/light_dome.php

Jacko has a UV lamp (the avi-sun by zoo-med). It *is* pretty expensive upfront, for both the stand and bulb but I like the mobility it has (I can position it as needed).
Regardless with any of the bulbs you really have to replace them every 6 months to a year im order for them to maintain their effiency and UV output---so I'd say maybe save and spend for a portable bird-safe fixture anyway even though the other options might seem cheaper upfront I'd be concerned about how user-friendly they are. Jacko also likes to pull the UV lamp's arm down and perch on it to watch TV on a side note so the lamp's pretty multi-purpose  .

For full spectrum light is definitely very important for cage birds. Indoor situation it is not easy to get proper light.

you can get spectrum light from online store.

I am prefer it.

I'm in the UK and I use the Arcadia avian compact lamp which fits to the top of the cage on a bracket. I have it on a timer for 10 hours a day though my bird will be out of the cage for several hours a day. It's pretty gloomy here in the winter & I've read enough to convince me it was worthwhile for my bird s health & wellbeing, though it was expensive - about £50 for the bracket & bulb. The Arcadia bulb lasts a year. This may have been a coincidence but the day I introduced the light he suddenly started trilling & whistling for the first time :danicing:

what sort of bracket are you using? I was thinking about getting the floor stand one so my two could share the bulb over the corner of each cage but I'm not sure the light and reflector will be long enough but I'm looking at about £80-89 for that.

I'm using the Arcadia Aviary Bird Cage Compact lamp holder & bracket plus the Arcadia lamp reflector, both of which I got from Predator Pets on eBay which was the cheapest price for that I could find

Those of you who have a system set up, does it increase your energy bills noticeably? I am interested in this, but because I share the house with someone else, I wouldn't want to accidentally increase our bill dramatically.

No, the bulb I use (Arcadia) is only 20 watts - energy consumption is minimal
