Replacing grate

Postby lwis » Wed Feb 08, 2012 1:59 am

Does anyone have any suggestions on where I might be able to get a replacement bottom cage grate, or what I may be able to use to make one??
My bird's cage does not have a grate. I guess one of the precious owners of the cage did not want it and got rid of it. I have just been replacing Darwin's cage paper often, but lately it seems like he has been purposefully leaving food at the bottom of the cage and then eating it later.
Any suggestions?

hi, i'm not sure where you get a replacement, but don't let your bird eat off the bottom.my amazon got very sick doing that.i had a cage without a grate.he ended up getting sick and i had to give him 2 different medications. he was overweight and the vet said that actually saved his life.

I try not to let him eat off the bottom, but without a grate it is rather difficult.
I am glad that your Amazon is okay.

hi,my amazon actually passed away suddenly last year. he was only in his 30's so i think it was poor diet and the chainsmoking in my grandmothers house before he came to me. but i could have lost him sooner if i hadn't taken him in when i did. i could never get him to stop and i tossed the cage and got another. i just didn't want you and your bird to go through the same.

lwis,
You can usually purchase spare cage parts from the manufacturers of your cage.
I've never done so myself, so I can't tell you how expensive (or reasonable) the prices might be, but you could try searching the manufacturer online and seeing if they sell grates for your cage.

Not sure if this'll work with the type of cage ya got, but most hardware/home improvement stores sell those adjustable wooden-frame window screens that come in many different lengths/widths. I use 'em for a multitude of reasons such as a top for my aquatic turtle's tank, laid across the top of a bathtub for a sweater dryin' rack, as a barrier to keep small non-flighted animals outta certain rooms, etc. Besides tryin' to make sumthin' yerself or buyin' a whole new cage, that's the best I can come up with.
