The Black Headed Caique that Im bringing home next weekend is VERY energetic and I wouldn't mind housing it in an 18X18 cage as long as it is outside the cage at least 80% of the time and flighted for ample exercise. Obviously, if the parrot is too large for the cage then no, such as a Cockatoo or Macaw. I dont think its bad if the parrot basically uses it just to sleep in at night or be used to house the parrot when it cant be supervised, such as when someone is cooking. You should buy the largest cage you can afford though.

What about a 18x18 for a Pois (senegal, Brown Head) who stays in his cage during working hours when nobody is home (ten hours per day, five days per week)? We are undecided between the 18x18 or 22x24 playtops and which brand is better quality.

Even though Senegals have less energy than a Caique does, I would recommend buying a larger cage then a 18x18 because it will be in the cage quite often. You say 10 hours a day, 5 days a week? Theres 24 hours in a day, and 168 hours in a week. (24 hours a day X 7 days week) So 50 hours out of 168 hours? (50 hours coming from multiplying 5 days a week by 10 hours a day) So 50 divided by 168 is 0.29 soo thats about 30% of the time. About 1/3 of the time, if not more because its safe to assume the Senegal would be in its cage when it slept and when it couldn't be supervised like I mentioned in my previous post. I would definitely recommend a larger cage. I would go for the 22X24 playtop. Like I said, its always best to buy the largest cage you can afford. Your little Sennie will appreciate the extra space when you're not home and its playing in its cage. ;) :senegal:

Thank you, brfussne, I will definately purchase a 22x24 for our Pois, which is actually going to be a Brown Head, that hasn't been conceived yet. We are on a waiting list with our local breeder to reserve a male, and the nest box has just been placed two weeks ago. So I am planning WAY ahead of time.
Thanks for your input,

Sylvia, just to clarify, the EX Care cage does come in a larger size....

lol, I'm just a nut who has to see what ALL the options are until I make up my mind! =P Have fun with your new, yet to be conceived kid! lol, I'm looking and I don't even have one lined up with a breeder! I just know what I want and I want/need to get it all lined up before getting my Senegal.

brfussne, I'm a little jealous over you getting a caique! I soooo want one, but they will require even more attention than a Senegal (which I also love), and I'm afraid with my work schedule I won't be able to make it happy. And it happy where my neighbors won't complain (I'm in an apartment and the only care taker). They are so smart, funny and so full of energy how can you not love them? lol, anyway, I love any bird!

You're welcome :) I'm no expert, just throwing my 2 cents out there! Haha! ;) But yes, buying the largest cage you can afford is always a good rule of thumb to go by! Any parrot will appreciate the extra space you can afford. :) Please update us about your baby Brown Head when you can. :D

I originally had a deposit on a Congo African Grey baby and while I was waiting on it i visited a parrot store for 3 months and i decided that a Grey just wasn't right for me, right now anyway! ;) I'm still intimidated by the larger birds. Ive been playing with the Caique for the past 3 months and i really fell in love with it. I just put a deposit on it last Saturday and plan to bring it home next Saturday. :) I too live in an apartment and thankfully, i think i got lucky, but my Caique isn't very loud. Ive heard it scream a few times and its no louder than a Budgie! When i put the deposit on the Caique, several people came up to me and were asking if it was still for sale. I guess i got it in the nick of time haha! Its very friendly & tame, I'm shocked someone hasn't bought it sooner!

brfussne, you'll have to post pictures when you get your baby home. You sound as in love as I am (with my yet to be conceived/hatched brown head). Keep us updated and I will too. :caique: :hatching:

Christie, I forgot that the EZ Care Cage also comes in a rectangular larger cage (for some reason, I had it in my head that the only larger size after the 18x18 was the bow front with plexi-glass. I would not rule that one out just yet (the one you linked me above), as it still seems to have most of the characterisics you specified. Now, if only we can satisfy our need for the most safest and non-toxic cage (I, too, am obsessed with finding such a cage). And yes, I will keep you updated on my (yet to be conceived brown head). Please keep us posted on your search for Senegal and Cage.

christie wrote:This cage (Midwest Poquito Avian Hotel) I am looking at for a travel/sleep/work cage. Is this one truly big enough to keep him/her in on days we go to work together or to travel on the weekends? I visit my parents every 3-5 weeks for about 3 days and I want something he/she would be comfortable in, but is still portable. I might be going on a week vacation I would be able to take birdie along with too. I'm actually thinking about getting two of these, one to keep at work and the other as a travel/sleep cage and just use a smaller carrier for the 10 min drive to work.

I have a brown-headed parrot and a green cheek conure. I own 2 of the Avian Adventure Avian Hotels. They are very spacious for travel cages and I really like them. I even had a vet tell me once that she thought it was a very nice cage. It's very convenient that there is a perch on top of the cage.

It would make a perfect sleep cage and it's great for traveling. As far as keeping him or her in the cage, well, it depends on how long she will be inside of it per day. I moved from MA to FL and had to stay with my sister for a week and my birds' larger cages were on a moving truck so they had to stay in the Avian Hotel but they were still spending most of their time outside of the cage. I gave them lots of toys and they would just hang out on the perch on top of the cage and I left the door open so they would go inside when they were hungry or thirsty.

One thing that's worth mentioning: those cages are HEAVY and somewhat difficult to carry by the perch handle because there is a very thin bar that runs the length of the perch on the bottom and when I hold the cage the bar kind of cuts into my hand. I mean it's not sharp and it doesn't break the skin but it's uncomfortable after a short time. It's manageable for short distances but, for example, I kind of have a hard time carrying it up a flight of stairs because it's heavy and large and the handle is hard to hold. I usually end up putting my hands underneath it and carrying it that way.

That being said, if I had it to do over again, I'd still buy the cages.

I second Michael; am 18x18 cage is definitely too small for a Poi who will be spending 10 hours per day in a cage.

You seem pretty sold on a playtop but if the bird will spend most of its day in the cage consider a dome-top instead. It's more spacious because instead of being flat on top there is a dome. Just as an example: the Avian Adventures "Nina" dome-top has an interior dimension of 20" x 18" x 30" whereas the playtop's interior dimension is 20" x 18" x 25". 5" may not seem like a lot more room but for a bird that will be caged 10 hours a day it is a lot more room.

You can always buy a separate play area.

Another idea is that some manufacturers make "convertable" cages. Again using the Avian Adventures "Nina" cage as an example, you can buy the playtop and then buy a dome-top "conversion kit" so you can swap it out whenever. Your Poi could have a more spacious dome-top for when you're gone and then a playtop for when you're home.

I'm not pushing Avian Adventure cages (although I have 2 AA travel cages that I really love) but just giving examples.

Just my two cents.

18x18? NOOOOOO! That's very very tiny!! I wouldn't even put my budgie in an 18x18.

I suggest a flight cage, it's very spacious and you can get it for under $180 with FREE shipping.
