The Black Headed Caique that Im bringing home next weekend is VERY energetic and I wouldn't mind housing it in an 18X18 cage as long as it is outside the cage at least 80% of the time and flighted for ample exercise. Obviously, if the parrot is too large for the cage then no, such as a Cockatoo or Macaw. I dont think its bad if the parrot basically uses it just to sleep in at night or be used to house the parrot when it cant be supervised, such as when someone is cooking. You should buy the largest cage you can afford though.
What about a 18x18 for a Pois (senegal, Brown Head) who stays in his cage during working hours when nobody is home (ten hours per day, five days per week)? We are undecided between the 18x18 or 22x24 playtops and which brand is better quality.
Even though Senegals have less energy than a Caique does, I would recommend buying a larger cage then a 18x18 because it will be in the cage quite often. You say 10 hours a day, 5 days a week? Theres 24 hours in a day, and 168 hours in a week. (24 hours a day X 7 days week) So 50 hours out of 168 hours? (50 hours coming from multiplying 5 days a week by 10 hours a day) So 50 divided by 168 is 0.29 soo thats about 30% of the time. About 1/3 of the time, if not more because its safe to assume the Senegal would be in its cage when it slept and when it couldn't be supervised like I mentioned in my previous post. I would definitely recommend a larger cage. I would go for the 22X24 playtop. Like I said, its always best to buy the largest cage you can afford. Your little Sennie will appreciate the extra space when you're not home and its playing in its cage.
