Newly painted wall and parrots

Postby Kuratnko » Mon Feb 20, 2012 11:35 pm

We are moving into a new place with our two sun conures and the landlord is painting the interior walls there. I hear how hazardous new paint is for parrots and want to take the max precaution...how many days should we wait after they finish the walls until we move in?
The paint is water-based. I would appreciate advice from anyone who has experience with newly painted walls. We are in northern California so humidity is low.

If its possible leave all the windows open in the painted rooms for a few days until you can no longer smell the fumes when you very first walk in from outside (doesn't give your nose chance to get used to the smell and think its gone when it hasn't). Personally I would then wait a few days more after that because a humans sense of smell is pretty under developed compared with most animals and I know how sensitive birds are to things.

Assuming the landlord knows you have parrots and is ok with it, this is what I would idealy do...

Ask them to leave one room unpainted, and move your birds in there first while the rest of the place airs out. Then after a week or so when the paint has cured and no longer "smells" move your parrot into the newly painted space and paint the final room.

Thanks for the tips! The landlord knows about our birds but they wanted to paint all the walls at once to get done with. following the advice, we wil air the house for a week and delay out move in until the walls do not smell at all.
