Postby Ducorp » Sat May 05, 2012 1:58 pm

hello all. i'm getting a baby hahns in about 4-6 months time. and im trying to pick a decent cage.

would this cage be ok ? it has 2.4cm bar spacing. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/320762836356? ... 1423.l2649

If I recall correctly, a Hahns is quite small weighing in at about 150grams. My guess is that 3/4" is okay, which is 1,9cm, the cage you linked has almost 1" spacing.

I found some info saying that 1.7cm, or 5/8" is optimal for a Hahns, but as I said, I dont think 2mm is gonna make much of a difference. The cage you linked will probably be pushing it though!

They are barely bigger than a Senegal Parrot. So 1" spacing is out. 3/4" is anywhere from ok to just a slight bit big. 5/8" is probably ideal but 3/4 should be ok. They are more fluffy/poofy than you'd think just looking at them. So sometimes it's only a matter of some bent bars, a turn of the head and being stuck there.

thanks micheal. apreciate the reply.
i think i'll go back to getting the other cage i had in mind. its the new skyline victoria playtop. it has 1.5cm gap between the bars so should be safer choice . its this one http://scarlettsparrotessentials.co.uk/skyline_victoria i know the advert says 2cm gap but scarlett was good enough to measure the actual gap (not including the bar thickness) and it came back at 1.5cm so definately a safer choice

thanks for your replys always appreciated

Just to throw a conflicting opinion in......

All my Cockatiels, Peach front conure and my Green cheek are both housed in cages with approximately 2cm bar spacing, the rosella was in a cage with 2.2mm spacing. I've never had a single problem with that spacing in just over 13 years. Unless all mine have fat heads there is no way they could get their heads stuck in the cage bars. I believe that the hahns macaw is bigger than all the species I've kept apart from maybe the rosella, so I should think another 2mm would be ok once it is fully grown. I wouldn't risk any bigger than that or put a baby hahns or smaller than average bird in it.

I like these two better, they are from the same website, and manufacturer as the cage you linked.
They are a little wider, the cage you linked looked a little cramped I think! Also, the price difference is pretty much the same, one is cheaper, one a little more expensive. The bar spacing says 2cm on these cages as well.
