Heated Perch

Postby Hermes » Wed May 23, 2012 3:36 am

I bought a heated perch for my bird's cage. I wanted to ask the community if they had any experience with these temperature controlled bird perches. They seem like a good idea but maybe not? Does it really help birds who are feeling sick to have a warm perch. I would like it but then I am not a bird expert yet ;-)

I don't know anything about heated bird perches, but as a reptile-keeper I would be wary of using any direct-contact heating device without a reliable thermostat. I would think that a heating pad hung on the side of the cage would be a better source of warmth for a sick bird than a heated perch.
Just my $0.02 though.

I wouldnt risk using one unless needed for medical reasons like bad circulation so the feet was getting cold. Anyone know if that can actually happen?

I'm just going to say my :sun: has a heated perch. There is a little plate that keeps him from getting at the cord and the cord is wrapped in a coil that's supposed to discourage chewing. The perch is cooler on one end and progressively gets warmer toward the other end.

The only time I see Skittles on it is when he is preening or napping. Other times he is more interested in his toys and food. I did take special care to move if as far from his water bowl as I could though. He does seem to love it though I do see why some people might be concerned about parrot safety. For me, the heated perch was just a better option than using a heating pad.
