Opinions on a cage?

Postby Fridgewithwingss » Sun May 27, 2012 1:04 pm

Hey, so I've been thinking of getting a lovebird in August (since last September!) and I've picked out a cage that I would like to buy, but I'd love any opinions on it :D

Okay, so firstly it'll be for a single lovebird, and it meets all the minimum cage requirements of course, and the bar spacing is fine, 1cm. It's a dometop as well, so it's plenty big enough! But what I'm really worried about is the shape. It's about a metre by a half metre by a half metre, and so it'll be very tall, especially for a lovebird! The height is double the width. However, the bird will hopefully be flighted from the breeder (If not I'll just let the flight feathers grow back in. I'll only clip if he has major, major attitude problems!) so I've heard they need more of a horizontal cage. Also, I have no idea about toy distribution in a tall cage- surely there'll be huge mess of toys at the top, and then nothing at the bottom? How would I fix this?

So, I'll link to the cage here- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/RAINFOREST-CARACUS-PARAKEET-BUDGIE-CANARY-FINCH-BIRD-CAGE?item=251044352209&cmd=ViewItem&_trksid=p5197.m7&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D4%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D8666412830136922489#ht_879wt_1037

I'd love it if anyone could give me their opinions on this cage. It's the biggest one I could find because I can't afford any of the really fancy, £200 a piece cages. I would love a wider cage, but I don't have either the space or can find one big enough! Will this one be okay? Thank you so much to anyone who replies

This is true, if you can, invest in a bigger cage which is wider =)!

Thank you for the reply! I am looking for a wide cage with roughly the same amount of space, but all the wide ones are smaller and I'll be gone for around six hours a day- Probably less than most people but as it's my first bird I don't want to mess it up and have it stuck in a tiny cage. I'm most likely irrationally worried about feather plucking! I really liked this one because of the great value for money and the easily accessible food bowls (I'll get clips to secure them!) Curse my brain that makes everything so over-complicated and never stops worrying!

Thanks again, I guess I'll keep looking. :swaying:

I had the same problem with my gcc's :gcc: cage as well. I fixed it with two different things. One, I used the branches off of the multi-limbed perches in the cage to hang things. Second I used bird safe chains to make them hang down longer. Nix loves it because he will not only play with the toy but swing on them as well!

Good luck!

Ohmygosh, that perch thing is a great idea! I never would have thought of that. Originally I was going to get some perches with toys stuck on the end (I found a site that did three for £7.50! I couldn't believe it, they looked like good toys as well!) but that sounds better. That's so cute that your GCC swings on the toys as well :D

Thanks for the reply, I'll definitely try that... eventually :D At least I'll be prepared, right?
