Flight Cage?

Postby ceruleansilver » Tue Jun 19, 2012 12:21 pm

:senegal:

I have a African Senegal named Tengu. Because he would bite me all the time, I tried letting his feathers grow in cause I heard that a bird sometimes bites cause it doesn't have the option to flee. This solved the biting problem, but now I have another.

He started hating his cage.

It's three feet wide, and two feet deep, and four feet tall, and after he started flying it has to be bare he won't tolerate being within a foot of it. As in, I would have to grab him, put him forcibly into it, and then he would sit at the bottom hyperventilating for hours. It broke my heart to see him like that. I had to take out all of his toys to make him feel comfortable. So, should I upgrade to a flight cage? I hate not having anything to keep him entertained in his cage, and all the larger macaw cages and such do not have the right bar spacing. He has to spend quite a bit of time in it, due to my working schedule he gets about an hour to three hours daily outside with me. I'm starting to feel like the big cage may be the only way he can have his toys and his flight space.

I think a flight cage would be better for him given the length of time he is out for, the biggest you can afford and have space for but try to get him out for longer on the days you don't work.
Introduce him to the new cage slowly before making it his home. Did you put anything new in the old one by the way? Or is there any possibility he got himself caught on a toy and got a fright from it?
Try introducing one toy in at a time, play with them outside his cage first and train him with them nearby. Reward him when he shows no fear and get his confidence back before putting them back in the cage. Double check them all for safety and throw any or modify any that look dubious.
As for getting him back in the cage, try to coincide a mealtime with the time you put him back in his cage. Try to make the cage a positive experience for him.

**edit** its important that a flight cages bars are strong enough for a sennie, alot of them are designed for budgies, cockatiels and the like.

i think the larger cage is a good idea but you have to make him like being in there.grabbing him to put him in the cage could make him hate the cage.my :corella: hated her cage so much she would self mutilate, ripping her feathers out,it was torture for me to watch so i used micheals method of only feeding in cage even treats were put in her food dish or hung up in her cage so she started to tolerate it.now she puts herself to bed before i even put the treat in.and no more bald spots when i get her up in the morning :D
