Bird Cages from Ebay (Aosom)?

Postby Eurycerus » Tue Jun 19, 2012 12:38 pm

I am going to be adopting a Senegal parrot (I've wanted to for four years and now I have the time and money) and I am looking at getting a good sized cage for her/him. :senegal:

Does anyone have any idea about Aosom? I found them through ebay (they seem to be one of the bigger sellers of bird cages if you start looking around) The particular cage I am looking at is from Aosom: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-26-x26-x61- ... 3cc796fa80

I want to make sure that my bird is happy and safe. :] Anytime I am home I will have my little Senegal out but I still wanted a larger bird cage than bare minimum. Thank you for your suggestions

My advice here would be a huge warning to be cautious.

I have purchased a few 'no-name' but supposedly quality cages from various manufacturers/companies--including those in pet stores. I no longer have any of them, my TAG lives in the largest KIngs Cage aluminium travel cage and I'm saving for the full size.

Each no-name cage I've bought turned out to be hazardous or a downright waste of money. An early stackable cage I bought at a local pet store years ago for a 'good price' had shoddy workmanship, sharp edges on the bars and the paint wore off revealing cheap zinc-coated metal!
A large, supposedly better quality non-toxic cage (to the tune of $400 dollars) I bought for her later was a huge hassle to put together (the pieces didn't fit together well) had crooked grates/bars and the same razor-sharp edges (cut both me and the bird)---not to mention it rusted with 5 months of purchase.

My kings cage I bought closing in on a year ago---there is a sliiight tinge of rust squeezed into the corners of one of the feed doors--but this was my fault. Almunium is a soft metal so there is scratches---but the cage is still strong and easy to clean. It puts up with a lot of moisture (due to my TAG wanting frequent misting and in-cage bathing) with no rusting. As with any travel cage there is wear and tear from knocking it down and putting it back up but it is still strong.

All this to say if I were you I would make the investment in a stainless steel or aluminium cage as it is better than replacing the cage every few years (or worse--months). If you choose to go with a powder coated cage I would look into the higher quality name brand ones at least.

Thank you for the advice and feedback. I felt trepidacious about purchasing a cage that had no reviews. I looked through the forum for other suggestions from people and found some more expensive, but better cages that had reviews.

I'm pretty darn excited. I rearranged my room in preparation already, even though the adoption process will probably take a month. :/

It looks big enough. Vertical cages take up less space but then you have the perch, food and where the bird is going to poop down on something in the cage. I wider cage would be better even if it has the same area.

Oh okay. I'll keep that in mind while I continue to poke around. It's much more of a battle than I thought, trying to find a cage that fits my budget, is sturdy, big enough, and safe. :]

I'm considering this one: http://www.petco.com/product/114150/Pet ... age-114150 even though it's more expensive than I'd like but it looks roomy and has a playtop (I like flat tops so I can let my bird out and have it wander around up there when not directly interacting with me)

If anyone has any other suggestions for a similar price range (up to 250 or so) I am definitely open to them. I'm so excited about my new little friend. I'll have to post pictures of us together. :]

That one is a better shape. Have you checked Craigslist or Ebay for second hand?

I've been studying both (ebay and cl) religiously. Not a ton of luck. It is nearly impossible to found a nice cage with 1/2 inch bar spacing (the right size for a Senegal) that is not small like the one I posted at the very top of the page or ugly/flimsy.
