Perfect Parakeet Place???

Postby Jv123j » Tue Aug 14, 2012 9:36 pm

Is 16.5 x 11.8 x 22 a good cage size for 1 parakeet or maybe 2? I'm thinking about getting 1 parakeet first so I could sorta taim it and I'll get the 2nd parakeet in like a month or so. Is that ok?

In my opinion, no it is far too small 11.8 will barely give them room to stretch their wings out. The absolute rock bottom minimum I would say was suitable for 2 budgies for the smallest dimension is 15/16 ish and even then I would prefer to give them alot more space.

I would agree that the cage needs to be bigger! I would say 18x18x20ish would be a good cage size. Although budgies are small they are active and require a lot of space for play and exercise. Also 1 month isn't really enough time to tame a parrot if your starting from scratch, unless by tame you mean settled in, and it's not something that should be rushed. It took about four or five months to get my parrot more or less tame (stepping up and down, handling wings, laying on back, targeting, going in and out of cage when asked, ect.) so tameing can take quit along time.
I don't know how difficult it is to train two untame parrots at once if you really have your heart set on two budgies, so maybe somebody else here can advise you on that topic.
Good luck with the new parrot, or parrots :D

It does work to tame two at the same time, kind of, depending on what you want out of your birds. Here it is illegal to keep a single bird unless you can fulfill its needs of a mate, wich means 24/7 company pretty much. And you still have 2 or more take birds even if some are more tame than others... In my house for example I tamed Polarn alone (although not super tame when it comes to touching yet, but he likes to hang out.) the budgie and cockatiel came here together and untame, they prefer birdie company but will step up if that earns them a treat and occationally come by and hang out but then not on me but next to me.
I do however think that it takes longer to tame two at the same time, simply because their not in "need" of your company and won't see you as their mate. This however comes with both pros and cons... And this is quite likely to happen in the end even if you tame 1 budgie first and then get another. The ups are tho that your just someone they hang out with for play and treats, the downs are basically the same though, that they do have each others to hang out with. As I said depends what you want out of your birds in the end.
