Setting up Outdoor Avairy

Postby Karma » Sat Sep 22, 2012 1:26 pm

We need advice on setting up an outdoor avairy. We have one in mind that we are going to build but we need to know where to place it. Most of our yard is in full sun all day. We will have a roof over it, so will location be important?

We have two parrots, an African Grey and a Macaw. They get along well together so there are no issues of them being in there together. We do not ever intend on leaving them unattended. Whenver they are in the avairy, we will be on our deck/patio area.

We welcome your input.

Thanks,
Karma and Jim

I would put it in a place where its not too windy, otherwise just make sure they can get some shade, so they dont have to be in the sun all the time. Sounds great with an aviary :), I wish I could have one as well :)!

what you could do is to actually plant a couple of trees that are birdsafe to provide some shade and shelter from the wind. some trees you can get at a decent size to begin with so would atleast provide some use. but as cml said not to windy and preferable with some shade available.

Agree with Polarn. Plant trees, not only for the shade, also for their fun their habitat :D Good luck on the Aviary! (:

well their actuall habitat wont really be affected by trees outside since they would be out of reach. the only thing they would provide is somewhat of a sheltering affect that might look more pleasent than having one wall on the aviary or something. the downside of having nothing for shade besides the roof is that they will sit quite high up hugging the roof everytime their in need of shade (unless the aviary is big enough for most of the aviary to be shaded while they have to move to one side for sunlight..)

I beleive we have decided to put it up against the back wall of our house. We have a bedroom window that we are going to attempt to use as an entry point into the avairy, to prevent a flight risk and not have to deal with putting on their harness everytime we take them out.

We have decided to wait until just before the Spring to build this. right now we are working on getting a larger cage for Willis :macaw: and will have to put money towards that instead. This has been an experience as well... trying to shop online for the right cage is not easy.

Once we have a larger cage for Willis :macaw: we will move Scratches :gray: into his cage. That will leave a cage (almost brand new --4 months of use) to use to foster a homeless/rescue parrot or for us to sell.

Anyway, we hope to get both the indoor cage and outdoor avairy worked out soon with pictures to follow.
