Good senegal cages?

Postby Nir » Thu Oct 04, 2012 1:06 am

Can someone recommend me good senegal cage? I dont want it to be too big where he never wants to leave the cage, yet i want him to be able to stay inside comfortably when i am not home. What cages are recommended usually for senegals?

Whilst I have no recommendation about cages per see I just wanted to say that the bigger the cage the better. I'm assuming you will be getting a hand reared or already tame bird, even if you don't its very rare a bird will want to stay stuck inside the cage no matter how big it is so don't let that put you off.
My green cheeks cage beats the size of a most grey or amazon cages, the only time he hasn't wanted to come out is once when he was sick.

Are you definitely settled on a sennie or are you still researching then?

done researching for now actually. From what i found so far, senegals seems like a fit (green cheeks as well). So if i end up getting one it will be one of those most likely. I like the fact that sennies enjoy laying on their backs. Even if he doesnt, it still is a closer fit then most. Probably will not get any bird though anytime soon but i might start getting supplies and putting it in my storage for the time being.

Conures are pretty playful too. Have a look at my photobucket link on my sig, I've just uploaded a few more of Ollie, he will also roll himself onto his back on the sofa or the floor on command.

Don't buy anything like this in advance (before having a deposit on a specific bird) because you aren't certain what bird it will be, what it's specific needs are, etc. You may end up getting a bird that comes with a cage or doesn't, etc. You'd just be wasting space keeping this stuff around for no reason and more than likely use that as justification for getting a bird you shouldn't get. All reasonable logic dictates not buying the supplies until you are in position to get the bird.

The bigger the cage the better, no matter what. motivate a bird to come out of its cage by having a cage it doesnt want to be in is the wrong way to go about it in my oppinion. I mean basically you can have THE most awesome room at home, good size, a fully stacked bookcase (whatever your hobby happens to be) conftible bed, sofa etc. No matter how nice your room is, you still want social interaction. I'm in no way saying a bird is like a human but they still want that social interaction, as long as you happen to be someone the bird wants to spend time with.

This is true. I hadn't even contemplated that as a possibility until I met a pionus that was going to come with his cage. I knew that if I decided on that parrot I could return the cage i bought to petco, no problem.

Yes and no. Shipping takes forever and some people getting rid of their parrot pets are awfully anxious to pass along their little friend. Also I had (as probably other people have) size limitations, and noise limitations which excluded a wide variety of parrots so buying a cage in advance was fine because all of the parrots I was interested in would be accommodated by the same size.

Nir there is no such thing as too big. I purchased this cage http://www.petco.com/product/114150/Pet ... -Cage.aspx and Nika loves it. As long as you are patient and friendly parrots will want to come out. :]

I agree with Michael.

I put a down payment on Tiki before I even looked at cages, let alone toys. I spent a few days looking at cages once she was purchased.

You don't want to buy just any cage; larger is better, sure, but the bar spacing is what's extremely important. You want to make sure the cage itself is safe for your specific bird.
