All reasonable logic dictates not buying the supplies until you are in position to get the bird.

I agree with Michael.

I put a down payment on Tiki before I even looked at cages, let alone toys. I spent a few days looking at cages once she was purchased.

You don't want to buy just any cage; larger is better, sure, but the bar spacing is what's extremely important. You want to make sure the cage itself is safe for your specific bird.

you put a down payment means he was still being weaned. many others who lives 2-3 hours away cant afford to be there during the weening process. Some gets the bird when its already weened, and others gets rehomes/rescues which sometimes comes with cages(but from what i know, you can wave the cage part of since you already might have a cage). So i see nothing wrong with getting the supplies before hand. And like i said, the size of the bird will not be bigger then a senegal for sure.

but i kinda understand michaels point since for me, it might be longer then couple weeks.

Well I see nothing wrong with getting stuff before time either. The cage I have is suitable for my green cheek but it is actually designed for amazons and greys which mean it could easily house a senegal too. Whilst I do think the cage is too small for the greys/amazons I could have changed my mind and still had a suitable home.
Toys can be a different matter, most smaller birds can play with most toys designed for a larger bird in safety but not the other way round.
Stuff like the initial supply of food and size specific things like harness should wait until the deposit is down and you know what food the bird is being weaned onto.

I have two new cages waiting, one is a bigger one for Harlie when she is ready, the other is for my next parrot. It is not the right time for another parrot for many reasons, I desperately want to fill it but some people do have self restraint.

as for toys... I have a hard time actually buying toys for Polarn I bought one that were supposed to be sturdy enough for the bigger toos and macaws... It took him about 15 minutes to strip every single wooden peice off of it.. but hey The rest of the toy were intact so into the workshop and put some sturdier wooden peices onto it and he now has a toy thats amazon sturdy :) I gave one of my toys to a friend who keeps a bluefronted as well, and he thought I was crazy giving him a toy for beavers.. apparently his doesnt destroy as much and as quick as mine does, so suitable toys may wery well wary not only on the size of the bird but the birds individual preferences and determination.

As for buying things ahead of time, well I dont really mind there to be honest. and yes while barspacing is important you can actually get suitable cages (looking at barspacing and safety) in any size you want, the major problem is that barspacing suitable for the smaller birds are usually used on too small cages (in my oppinion) so they start stocking up the next step with too big barspacing on cages that barely is suitable for tiels... wich makes you end up having to order cages instead (atleast here, and we even have regulations on what the minimum cagesizes should be and the stores are still stocking cages in this way but has numerous signs up saying you can get this cage with budgiebars etc etc)

Yes, although Tiki was "technically" weened when I bought her; she had been on a pellet diet for a while when I put a down payment on her. I just think it's best to start in steps: settle on a bird, (or have your bird choose you!), then look at toys and cages. Before I bought her, I was looking at Tiki as well as her two brothers. Out of that clutch, Tiki "chose" me; whenever she saw me she flew at me, which made even the shop manager laugh. :) I spent a lot of time at the bird shop to bond with her before I took her home, and after my decision I spent a lot of time looking at toys and treats and discussing with experienced bird owners what was best for a baby sennie. Then, I spent a lot of time looking at cages, also receiving good advice for that, too. So, I personally recommend starting with a bird first -- finding a sennie that you bond with before going to the next step -- but everyone is different, I s'ppose. :)

If you know the size bird you are getting, I don't see anything wrong with getting the cage, toys, etc .. before the bird. You will just be that much more prepared when you get your new bundle of joy.

I'm assuming you will be getting a hand reared or already tame bird, even if you don't its very rare a bird will want to stay stuck inside the cage no matter how big it is so don't let that put you off.
My green cheeks cage beats the size of a most grey or amazon cages, the only time he hasn't wanted to come out is once when he was sick.

Are you definitely settled on a sennie or are you still researching then?
