Postby Pricey_boy » Thu Oct 04, 2012 7:32 am

my lutino scaly breasted lorikeet was sitting in the corner of his cage and scratching on the ground and was ripping paper so i gave him a nesting box and he sits in it all day and has for a few months but has never layed eggs does this mean hes gonna start laying soon hes about 21 mnths old now

if i get him a mate will he stop paying attention to me or worse not like me at all ?

If your lori is male there is no way he will lay eggs, the males aren't designed for that. Of course it could be that you call him a he out of habit because you never had him sexed and he is indeed a she.
I will point out I know nothing about loris as a species but it is common in alot of other parrot species for the males to help with nest building.

The shredding of paper isn't always a nesting behaviour also as some birds just do it for the fun of it but I would advise you to remove the nest box as by providing it you are encouraging hormonal behaviours.

I also don't think your bird needs a mate, by the sounds of it he has plenty of company from what your profile says. Yes ok it isn't the natural thing but they are in a domestic environment which is far from natural anyway, if you do decide to get another bird then I would get yours sexed and get another one of the same sex so they have each other for company but are not going to add to the problem of there being to many pet birds and not enough good owners along with all the other problems that breeding can bring like egg binding, genetic problems etc.

Vets can do it, also there are places online you can send a feather sample to which are usually alot cheaper than the vet. Avian biotec is one company that does it but I don't know what country you are in so you may need to research companies in your country.
