Outdoor Aviary.

Postby jeremyheskett1989 » Sun Feb 10, 2013 8:32 pm

Hey all! My name is Jeremy. I'm planning on relocating to Hawaii with my partner and we are getting an apartment in Honolulu with a HUGE Lanai, I was going to build an outdoor aviary on it and put some fruiting plants on there, herbs/vegetables/fruits.

My first concern is for the outdoors. I wanted to build some sort of place the birds can fly free and play, and enjoy being outdoors, while keeping the mess outdoors.

Hawaii obviously is around the same 70-80 degrees fahrenheit all year long, and it rains almost daily, but not for very long.

I wanted to know what everyones thoughts are on doing this? If it's ok for the birds health to be exposed to the outdoors all year long.

My plan was to use a wood frame and use wire cage fencing to enclose the aviary. and should I also put a roof on the ceiling to keep the rain out? Or would that not hurt?

I've had parrots all my life in my home and have always wanted some sort of aviary/sanctuary to escape to.

Any thoughts and input would be appreciated. :D

Be sure to use wire that is parrot safe, so no chicken wire or anything that could have nickle, zinc, lead, or any other harmful metals. Of course make sure the spacing isn't too large and they might get their heads stuck. The temperature sounds fine granted you provide shelter from wind and rain. Also wood is chewable so make sure they can't chew themselves into trouble!

You should put a roof on it, if not to keep the rain out, than to keep wild birds from landing on top of the aviary and pooping. :flapping:
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands.
