Advice needed on new cage?

Postby JaydeParrot » Fri Jun 26, 2015 3:25 pm

Been thinking of building a 6 ft long by 3 ft tall cage for my sennies, I've contacted a cage maker who said they can make it. The company is called Rosemead, they make cages purely based on what you want it to look like.

I'm very interested in using Rosemead but was wondering if anyone else had used that company before and what they thought of it?

Also, they used aluminium squared mesh, would anyone know the ideal size of the square holes and thickness for the wire for a Sennie? There are a range of choices on that and I'd want to make sure I had the correct one?

Thanks.

Never heard of these people but will check them out soon. I have considered building a cage but things get in the way at times, but I have not given up on it. I always thought that for my Senegal that a 5/8 in square mesh made from a 9 Gauge wire would be perfect.

It's 0.1144 inches or 2.906 mm.

Have seen an interesting cage called Rainforest La Pez, the bar spacing is 1 cm and the bar size is 2mm, was wondering if that sounds too small for a Sennie?

I wonder if a sennie would be able to bend 2mm bars with it's beak?

The bar spacing could be bigger and no I don't think that he could bend a 2mm wire.

Spacing is too narrow which is dangerous but the other worry is that only passerines cages are made with such bar gauge and they are never safe for parrots (bad paint). And, Wolf, I beg to differ but I think that a Senegal can bend a 2mm wire!

This is why I shy away from metric measurements, I don't get a good picture of them in my head. You said that a 9 gauge wire is almost 3 mm and it is a pretty strong wire and is larger than most high tensile wire used for keeping cattle in. So I figured that the high tensile wire would be close to 2 mm, but I guess that I erred.

No, no, I think we might both be right because it all depends on what kind of metal is used for the wire, right? The thing is that passerine cages use some kind of soft metal (I don't know which) because it's very easy to bend -even with my arthritic fingers!
