Michael wrote:Something I think people may confuse for dominance is the fact that parrots just prefer to sit higher in general which doesn't necessarily interpret as dominance. If a parrot is on the floor or low table, it is likely to fly up to you if called just to be higher. However, if a parrot is happily sitting up on a fan, cabinet, etc... it's harder to call it down to you. I don't think this is the parrot exhibiting its dominance over you, it's just naturally feels safer higher so going up is reinforcing but coming down isn't.

I think it depends on the bird, I have 2 Cockatiels, Birdie and Mali. Birdie is about 10, Mali just turned 1. If Birdie gets on your head, she makes herself a nest, then picks any dirt out of your hair, and she can't fly high enough to get onto the curtain rails(she's fully flighted, just a bad flier). Mali however, is not allowed on heads, or curtain rails, or the top of the fridge, or anywhere else above me. Once she gets up there she puts her wings right up and hisses, bites, etc, if you grab her and bring her below eye level she'll cuddle into you and put her head down for a scratch. It's like something snaps inside. Odd bird.

That's exactly my point. It isn't dominance. It's just that the parrot doesn't want to be forced down by you and gets defensive.

Nevermind Kili, I like the beard action going on. Facial hair and parrots are an excellent mix as you can see from my photos!
