I Am So Proud Of My Baby Boy

Postby ParrotsForLife » Mon Jan 04, 2016 10:08 pm

Remember I was posting here about Rocko and trying to teach him flight recall and I was always failing and Rocko was afraid to fly to me.Well now his wings are fully grown and yesterday I bought two books The perfectly trained parrot and Parrot parenting. So today I thought I would try again with him and I was gonna start of with just small hops but he was ready to fly from far distances and I was amazed to feel his sharp nails on my arm.I am so proud of him,We did this for about 10 minutes and I gave him a Jackpot reward.Flight recall will be very useful hope I can teach this to all my birds. Also Michael you should put your training Book on iBooks.

That is as exciting as a toddler standing up for the first time and walking to you.
I am happy for you and your boy.

Like say the treat was millet then a jackpot reward would be to let them have more millet than they usually get for doing such a good job.

I read about a training method that uses this term.

The trick is to get a bird addicted to training, in a similar way a human gets addicted to gambling. You basically give hem a random amount of treats for a reward. May give them 1-3, or as a "jackpot", 5 or more. Sometimes, you may not give them anything for a few clicks, and then give them a jackpot. The bird can't predict what exactly he'll get after every single click, and that's what keeps them from getting bored of it.

I only used the clicker once or twice and then stopped using that and the target stick and just called him and he was coming to me by just calling him.

Ahhh, I see. Thank you for the explanation. It would not work with my birds, they are never hungry except early in the morning and even when they do have favorites, they couldn't possibly eat that many treats in a full crop
