Tube Training Success

Postby kyrubas » Tue Apr 12, 2016 9:43 pm

We saw Michael's tube training trick with Truman and decided to give it a go with Velli (Sun) and Dac (Jenday)
Seen here is Michael's Truman doing the trick as he explains it:

So far so good with Velli. She's still a bit hesitant, but we only have to target her through the tube once and she gets the idea. Dac will do it with targeting, but is still warming up to the idea and usually just watches Velli from one of our shoulders.

Seen here is Velociflaptor running through the tube:

It took a couple of weeks of just leaving the tube next to their cage and a couple of sessions before they reliable approached the tube.

Ok, so one more video. They're much more eager now and often have little run-ins and traffic jams. Still need to work on getting them to clear the tunnel. It would help if we hadn't reinforced the habit of blocking the tunnel on the other end to look for seed.

Edit: Arg... YouTube is being fickle with its editing options. We'll see if it edits it not to be not sideways... :?

Great job ! you are right that you should bring them out and off to the side to reduce tha traffic jam that they are experiencing. Still they are very cute while doing this and even the back up of traffic is very cute, but it would be better if you cleared the tunnel of the first bird before the next one tries to go through.

Have you considered raising the tunnel about 3 or 4 inches and putting a ladder at each end?

 I love how the second bird goes through the tunnel just after the first and how it figures that, if the first one is getting a treat, he deserves one too even if he didn't do it.

We'll have to try that Wolf.
Just today I was able to prop the tube up against my leg at an angle and get them to slide down it. It's a bit surprising how fast they took to sliding down the tube. I think I'll have to devise a proper slide for them with a better length.

Re: Tube Training Success-Now fetch

Postby kyrubas » Sun May 08, 2016 8:27 pm

So this was a behavior we captured from Dac yesterday and have been modifying it into fetch. He would pick-up and throw these wooden blocks which are a component that we make their toys from. Once we noticed this we started rewarding him when he would throw it into our hands and have gotten to the point where we can get him to fetch over short distances.
