What wood is safe? and toy questions..

Postby Noodlecakelol » Mon Jun 27, 2016 9:06 pm

I'm going to make my Senegal parrot Xilo,
Some dyi toys and some perches out of cut tree limbs.. :senegal:

and I'm wondering what kind of wood would be safe??

these are the trees I have around my house:
Maple, ash, and Lilac ( the wood from lilac bushes ).
I read that all of these are okay but I just want to make sure these are actually okay?

I'm also wondering if any of you guys know how to make dye for toys?
like vegetable base dye's or just food coloring?

and if any of you have any fun dyi cage stuff (:

Yes, these woods you have listed are safe :D
This is a really good link for the safe or not branches that I use whenever I am unsure:
http://www.mdvaden.com/bird_page.shtml
Athough these branches are safe wood, there is no way to know if they are infested with insect or growing fungus ect: I asked the members here and now cook my branches at 180°C for 45 minutes, this is hot enough to kill of any living organisms, but just cool enough that your branches will not split in the oven.

Colouring the branches you can use food dye-it is safe, or you could try to get some safe plants such as indigo and tumeric and colour them that way. I actually dont colour my branches, the parrots love them just as is, and will pretty much strip the wood straight away.

Good luck, I am constantly searching for new toy ideas to make, so I would absolutely love it if you could share some photos of what you make :D

Hmmm, I have read that food coloring is safe but, to tell you the truth, I am not that sure because I read recently that the red color (made with crushed insects) has been found to have negative behavioral effect on children... I never color anything I use for my parrots but veggie dyes would be safe, I think.
