Well, I'll weigh in from the Rickeybird's angle...

No, I don't think he much likes training. My darling is not a really smart fellow I'm sure there is variation within species. Maybe some Patagonians are geniuses. But mine... well...

He is stymied by forage toys, can't figure out the fastest routes from point A to point B when cage perches are changed; NEVER learns that certain big toys when swung, knock him off his perch (I just take them away). He's a great mimic, and a real character, but...

Do you watch Big Bang Theory? He's a Zack. Goodlooking guy but not one of the rocket scientists.

So when he senses there is training... a challenge... something new... a new item... a problem to be solved... he gets MAD, turns around and will march/fly back into his cage.

I don't care. He's already a perfect Rickeybird!

 Yes, of course he gets mad! People who don't learn to leave him alone even after he has taken years and years training them are annoying and not deserving of any more patience!

Gaugan loves to do some touching clickers and getting treats, but evntually she gets tired of it and will look at you and look at where the treats are coming from and then point with her beak in the direction of the treats......she has had enough and figures you should just give her the treats now and not make her work.....lol..

I accepted total defeat years ago.
It's easier this way.
Bird does whatever he wants, when he wants, how he wants.
I have zero expectations.
That way I don't get hurt feelings.
With luck, I don't get hurt fingers or ears!

I've been thinking...
Everybody at once... OH NO!"

Why have I not (and why am I unable/unwilling) to train the Rb to do anything that he doesn't want to do?

Because if I have a treat, and he sees it and wants it, I HAVE to give it too him. I simply cannot/will not NOT give him what he wants.

Consequently, I have a Tazmanian Devil on my hands. I love him. I have no complaints, really.

Maybe I need absolution. I'll do ten Hail Rickeys and five Our Parrots.

So there you have it and now we know! The Rickeybird really does enjoy his training sessions. He gets treats for his training of you and he does this all without having to give you any treats whatsoever, A M A Z I N G, don't you think? :violin:

Oh, don't feel so bad about it, Gail. I am sure that we all give in to them at one time or another - I know I do!
