Hooded Parrot

Postby Navre » Mon Oct 03, 2016 7:36 am

Does anyone have any experience with Hooded Parrots?

They are tiny, budgie sized, or smaller. The males are blue. They are termite eaters from Northern Australia.

I can't find much information online. They're rare here, but I thought some of our Australian members may be familiar with them

Or maybe a golden shouldered Parrot? They're fairly similar.

What do you feed a bird who in nature eats termites?

I'd imagine you could add mealworms to the diet.

Or start an "all natural" extermination service.

Not sure that they eat many of the termites. They have a sort of symbiotic relationship with the bird nesting in the termite mound. That not only helps to provide climate control for the eggs and the baby birds, it would probably help with defense as well as most animals will avoid the termite mound.

Video of Hooded parrots in the wild from when I visited Australia. From what I understand, they don't eat the termites but rather just nest in their mounds.

Neat. Thanks.

I'm reading that they're aggressive, but I don't know if it's toward all other birds. Or just birds of their own species.

Most of the information is about breeding.

Does anyone know the best diet for these guys? I assume, since they're essentially grass parakeets (I think), that they would eat a seed based diet, supplemented with veggies, fruits, legumes, etc, but I can't find much info information on them.

The only place that they seem to be mentioned on this site is in this thread.

Yes, they are grass keets and, as such, they would eat a primarily grass seed mix (canary seed, millet, a bit of safflower, that kind of thing) so I would feed it a good budgie mix during the winter and add hemp and some insect protein (I use freeze-dried meal worms) during breeding season accompanied with a different kind of leafy green every day. I doubt they are fruit eaters but I would try things like baby peas, diced or grated carrots, fresh corn, etc. - maybe some cooked whole grains mixed with some mashed butternut squash or sweet potatoes just to give him some variety and amp up the betacarotene.

Thanks! My regular gloop has most of those things. I will find a good budgie mix. We have some "extra small bird" pellets, but I thought seeds would be better.
