How can I make the good relationship with my amazon parrot?

Postby Soulbird » Thu Dec 22, 2016 9:47 am

Hi, all.
I adopted a blue fronted amazon a month ago. :amazon:
His name is 'Lucky'. (2years old)
I always effort to that "I'm a good man." for my parrot.
For example, give the sunflower seeds or apples and so on.

I really really want to scratching his head or body.
But he always run away, or attack my hand.
So, I dont touch him. But I really like him.
I want to know that how can I make the "Trust" with my parrot.

Please, help me.
I'm waiting for your advices.
Thank you.

Is he tame at all? If he trusts you and he's tamed then he might just not like to be touched.

Welcome to the forum.

Respect for them and what little they can call their own is very important. Spend more time where it can watch you and try to figure you out without making contact.

They are prey animals and born with the instinct to stay away from preditors. Spend more time where your bird can watch you without you interacting with it. He needs to learn that you are not going to eat him.

Most of their preditors come from above. Find a way to set up a perch that is at your face level. Hands are their fear. Though Myrtle is very bonded to me she will fly away if I try to touch her head or back. It is instinct. Keep your hands below her face level. Until, like Rainbow, they can explain themselves you just have to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Myrtle only lets me touch her head when she is hormonal. I have to take advantage of her emotions to preen the waxy feathers on her head. She looks pretty bad right now with waxy feathers sticking up on the top of her head.

I can touch Oscars back but he doesn't let me touch his head just yet and I can touch his neck and spread out his wings, Also look at his feet when I need to file his nails. He is also harness and flight suit trained and we are just working on trust at the moment because even though he's a hand reared baby he was with the breeder for a long time and now has a new family.

Amazons don't really like to be touched much (they are only cuddly when hormonal and that is one thing that needs to be avoided as the plague with them!) and you should never touch a parrot's back (it's a sexual caress to them - again, a hormonal zon is an aggressive zon). The only places you can touch a parrot are the head, neck and cheeks, anywhere else is a no-no. Also, the diet you are giving him is too high in protein, amazons need to eat a very low protein diet with lots of produce (low protein, low fat, high fiber, high moisture is the rule), thankfully, they are excellent eaters so transitioning them to a good diet is relatively easy. My amazons (four of them) eat gloop and raw produce for breakfast and all day picking and a low protein mix of nuts and seeds for dinner (I also give them a multi-vitamin/mineral supplement mixed in their gloop once or twice a week, depending on the season).

Developing a relationship with an adult rehome parrot takes a loooong time and it should always be done following the bird's pace -meaning, not asking and never insisting on something the parrot is not willing to give at the time and always waiting for the bird to take the first step into taking the relationship up another notch.
