Egg cartons

Postby Navre » Mon Sep 05, 2016 7:13 am

I was going to make a toy for my grey with egg cartons, but I was concerned about salmonella from the eggs, and I didn't think there was any way to clean an egg carton.

Perhaps I could microwave it?

I would check out the use of UV light. I know that it does destroy many bacterial life forms, but I do not know if salmonella is among them. I think that using the microwave might be too dangerous to use for this purpose. You would have better heat control with an oven and as long as the temperature remains less than 600 degrees Faranheit the egg carton should not catch on fire. I would not set the oven above 450 degree. just to be safe, but is that enough to kill salmonella, I don't know?

I don't think the microwave would heat it up if there is no moisture in it. I was hoping that the microwaves would destroy any bacteria.

Using a conventional oven is also an idea.

I know UV light is supposed to work, but I've seen politicians walking around in the full sun, unaffected, so I'm suspect.

My grey came from the rescue with a homemade toy that was made out of small plates, the same material as egg cartons. He ignored it for a while, but once he decided it was safe (a month-long process for a grey) he really enjoyed tearing it up.

I put a cup of water in the microwave and set for 10 minutes when I want to sterilize toys. It does not take much time for the toys to dry.

150 F kills all bacteria, including salmonella.

I buy eggs in plastic containers. I wash them in dish soap and let them dry naturally. They like to destroy them almost as much as boxes.

My neighbor now has chickens, so egg cartons are sent to him for a refill.
