Weighing Nerd

Postby galeriagila » Wed Feb 22, 2017 4:57 pm

I have become one.

After ages of not attending to this important issue, I got serious again. Got a nice sturdy kitchen scale, and a small wooden perch which the Rb is willing to step on, and...

We're weighing twice a week. 233 grams for the last few.

But then I started measuring EVERYTHING. His food, how much he eats, how much he drinks, how much *I* eat, how much perches weigh, how much my jewelry weighs... oh, and the average green chile weighs about 5 grams.

Any other weighing nerds?

I weigh the birds every morning after they poop. I used to keep charts but now I'm so in tune with their weight fluctuations that I can do it from my head. I don't weigh food, I count it out by volume.

I use a NU Perch scale because it has the same kind of perch the birds have on their stands and in their cages so they readily on it without any additional training.

I weigh Oscar every morning, Just my luck that my scale stops working and on that same day was Oscars vet visit and they weighed him there and gave me a free scale which is better than the one I had and he started using it right away it even comes with a bowl useful for weighing baby birds (Kiki the Kakariki).

Omg I wish I had gotten that super-sexy scale, Michael, instead of MacGyvering my own clunker. Maybe I'll ask for that for Christmas. Training? I'm just a wannabe. The Rb gets loose, terrorizes the house, then is lured back in his cage with green chiles. Watching your videos is kinda like... watching romantic movies. My actual marriage is... different! Not complaining! I love the Rb AND my ol' man! I'm gonna visit the store and see if there's anything I can't live without.

ParrotsforLife... I used a mechanical postal scale for 20 years. It finally broke. Feels good to be be back on track. The Rb has yet to weigh anything but exactly 233. Oh and yestetday, he ate (or threw, more likely) exactly 23 grams of Harrison's. Oh, yeah, he tosses or drops a lot. And he drank/splashed exactly 33 grams of water. Today maybe I'll weigh his green chile before and after he "enjoys" it.

My Amazon weighs 219 grams on a empty crop and around 250 after eating though he will weigh around 350-400 maybe more when he is an adult.

Oh, wow... he eats (or throws) a lot. I'm fighting the urge to gather up the Rb's dropped-thrown pellets and weigh THEM!

I wish the Rb would eat more. He's non-stop active and only seems to eat to live. Our vet says Patis are usually lightweight but that Rb is thin even for a Pati. :/

Wild birds are always skinny and I personally think that avian vets are so used to seeing extremely sedentary birds that they think that any bird that is not plump is too skinny. My birds are all skinny - even Pablo, which is extremely handicapped, is not plump at all.
