Expierenced Keet lady, but new here!

Postby AnneBoleyn » Tue Mar 21, 2017 6:32 am

Waves hello from Dandelion and Burdock, my rescued young plum head pair.
I am 50 and many years ago I kept and bred many parakeets, but then I also got a job which meant I had to travel a lot (mostly flying in south east Asia) and it broke my heart that I could no longer continue. After 22 years I retired last year and began to search for a young pair of plum heads (which I had previously kept) and I found a very young pair not far from where I live, however these poor babies appear to have suffered some degree of mistreatment. Neither bird has a leg ring or wing clip although I have estimated their hatching date to be around June 2016. Both young birds have had their wings clipped (I am very against doing this) and the wings of Dandelion, my little girl have been cut terribly! I shudder to think that maybe they have never flown. I have tried to do some "step up/down" finger training, but they cling to my chest together and just want to be cuddled (unusual for plums) Their large cage is next to my chair, but when I leave the room they call out to me until I return. I have registered them with my vet but I would love an avian specialist to give me babies the once over, and both of them have developed a mad passion for raspberries!
Well that's my intro, and I really look forward to chatting and getting to know others here.

Thank you so much for the lovely welcome. :D
This is a terrific forum!
I have been Keet mad all my life. My first was a male budgie who I called Sparks when I was just 3 years old. I still have an old photo of me with him on my finger giving me a kiss. (1970)
We grew up together, and I would hurry home from school to clean his cage and play things, give him fresh food and water and let him play out in my bedroom. It broke my heart when he died when I was 12.
But because of my job over the years I have had my own wings clipped as regards to keeping a beautiful feathered companion, but now I have took early retirement I can devote all my love and attention to Dandelion and Burdock.
Looking forward very much to chatting and thank you again for the welcome!

Hi Pajarita! :D
I have had Dandelion and Burdock for about 6 weeks now after rescuing them from someone who did not want them and they had both been quiet neglected (during these few weeks they have improved 10 fold!) and they are both babies of between 6 and 7 months old, but they don't have any leg rings, so my age is only an estimation. As such they do not have their adult plumage yet (they are a Plum head pair and Burdock has been dna sexed) To bring them up to full health I have been feeding them a high vitamin mix and dried fruit, nuts as well as fresh fruit (they adore raspberries!) and corn cob. They both have delightful but very different personalities. Dandelion (the girl) is defiantly the boss! I am currently working on "step up/down) finger training, but sometimes they just want a cuddle and love being wrapped in a warm towel after a bath. I will post some pictures soon.

Hi there, and thanks! :D
I am not very tech savvy (must be my age!) but I will take some photos tomorrow. I am in absolutely in no hurry to see their adult plumage, as they are soooo cute as babies! But yes, Burdock will look so handsome as he grows up. He is quite cheeky too and will sometimes try and snatch a tasty morsel from Dandelion, but where as Dandelion has mastered eating a piece of fruit with her claws (very adult!) Burdock has not quite got the hang of this yet, and keeps dropping things. And things can get very messy with their beloved raspberries!

I am going to get another myself so Mango can have a bond with his own species, I don't know how long I would be waiting to find another but if the same place has one ill get it even if its another Male.

I kept a single male plum in the early 80s' called Disco, and he was very disruptive until I was advised to get him a same species friend as they flock in the wild. At the time I could not find a female, so I got another male and Disco calmed down as they got on so very well. How old is your plum head?
