Max Bar Spacing for Sennie?

Postby pfinarffle » Tue May 04, 2010 3:35 pm

What is the widest bar spacing that would be safe for a :senegal:'s cage? We need to get our bird a temporary home while we're abroad. Found a great deal on a folding cage. Unfortunately, the mesh/bar spacing is 1", and I fear that might be too wide. :( Yet the manufacturer lists Senegals as a good fit for it! :?

Hmm... I kind of don't think so. I wouldn't go with anything over 3/4" for sure and 5/8" being ideal. The cage I bought for Cape is 3/4" spacing and I think my Senegal Parrot could be ok in there but at the max. Any more than that and I think she could get her head stuck between the bars.

Michael is right. 1 inch is too big for a Sennie. No more than 3/4 for sure. That is what mine is.

Thanks! I decided not to go with what was available because of bar spacing. I had a feeling he'd somehow get into trouble with that amount of room. Plus with two cats and a dog in the sitter's house, it'd be better to have the bars much closer together to prevent other animals from getting near him.

I just measured mine a little while ago after reading posts here, and my Senegal is in a 24x26x36 inch cage with 1 inch spacing between bars, which you all say is too wide and could be dangerous. I have to say though, I was not aware of any limits and asked the store which cage I need and this is what she sold me, and I realize they don't always know of what they speak, but honestly, I don't see a chance in heck that he could fit his head thruogh the space between bars.

You'd be surprised. I've seen a couple of instances of heads being stuck and one budgie who actually managed to squeeze his entire body through a bar space that I never would have though possible!

Basically if the entire beak can fit through the bars, the rest of the head can follow. And you must check the beak with the head turned sideways rather than straight in. I'd say the Senegal beak at it's narrowest is about 3/4" which is why even 3/4" spacing is the upper limit. Pchela, would you concur?

Yes, that sounds about right Michael.

I wouldn't go higher than 3/4" bar spacing for a Senegal either...

I just wanted to note (now having a 3/4" spaced cage for Truman) that the 3/4" bar spacing is really cutting it close with a Senegal. I held Kili up to the bars and they are just close enough that her head doesn't fit. But if they get bent in the slightest (like from a previously mounted perch), they could actually give enough room for a Senegal or similarly sized parrot to get its head stuck in the bars. I really prefer to see a Senegal Parrot in 5/8" spacing. Anything over 3/4" is absolutely unacceptable though.

For a Cape Parrot, 3/4" spacing is great and 1" could work as well. Anything over an inch is once again getting to be too much.
