An aviary is a building or large cage that is home to many birds. An adult thats basically an aviary bird would not be suitable as a pet. You need a bird that is bonded to humans.

Hi stevenjk,

I am starting to like pacific parottlets. I have heard they are very delicate and they really are tiny but that means that there droppings are easy to clean up, right?

You have been a real help thank you, Safah

Parrotlets are not easy birds for all their small size and it's not easy to keep them happy (they tend to pluck when they are an only bird). I have to tell you that I disagree with Steve about keeping a pair of tiels and I am sure that Liz does too as she has a little flock and they all love her. I've never, ever seen a cockatiel fight with another one and I had a flock of 34 of them. They might bicker a bit during breeding season when they are very young and choosing their mates but they never actually fight and it's only one single season because, after they choose their mate, they stick with it for the rest of their lives. He is right in that a single bird will want your company more than a pair but I love birds and having a single little one is not something I would even consider because, to me, their happiness and health comes before my convenience or enjoyment.

I assume the smaller the bird the smaller the droppings.

Im not sure about parrotlets because ive never had one.

Far more important than choosing a particular species is how you bond with an individual bird. When you decide to get one you could visit a local sanctuary so you can meet birds in need of homes face to face to see if you click with one.

If i were you i wouldnt go no bigger than a cockatiel though.

Pajarita is factually correct of course. The basic mentality is the more the merrier and safety in numbers but i believe as long as you are around a lot and the bird is living with the family i think we can provide it with the company and stimulation it needs to be relatively happy.

I will concede that if someone goes to school or work throughout the day a pair is probably best but you do need the facilities to quarantine if one becomes ill.
