Just lost my nearly 31-year-old DYH Amazon.

Postby Ladyhawk » Sun Apr 30, 2017 8:49 pm

I got my Amazon parrot, Gabby, right around my nineteenth birthday and he was with me for nearly all of my adult life. Back in February, he suddenly became ill and despite the best efforts of avian vets, he died of kidney failure. Dr. Brian Speer couldn't even tell me why his kidneys failed, so I don't even know exactly why he's gone. If you've ever shared a pair bond with a parrot, you know what I'm feeling right now.

I didn't have any other parrots, but I can't see myself as parrotless for the rest of my life. I'm here to catch up on advancements in parrot care and behavioral modification before I decide to adopt another feathered friend.

I imagine I'll just browse until I feel I can respond. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum. Most of us know how you feel. It is like loosing a child.
I have a 32 year old DYH and it would really tare me up to loose that little girl. She is like a 5 year old child.
I am glad that you want another. You should not waste the love you have for birds. Please find a rehome or rescue.

Oh, my, I am sooooo very sorry for your loss! We know how you are feeling - I lost my Freddy Too on March 10th and it took me a couple of weeks to be able to function normally.

My recommendation to you is to get another one as soon as you are able (please adopt, don't buy a baby). This is a win for both sides because the bird will benefit by getting a good home (there are sooo many out there in need of one!) and you will benefit because, although the new bird will not fill up the hole that losing Gabby left in your heart, it will help with the grieving process by filling up the hole in your home and your routines.

And, please, let us know if there is any way that we can be of service, my dear.

I too lost my precious Rosie after a very lengthy illness that DR. SPEERS and his team had been treating for several months. They couldn't give me an answer either and I think that so many illnesses mask as something else by the time they figure it out or think they have figured it out there's been so much hit and miss with medication , shots ,etc that the poor sick bird gets lasting complications from the things that were suppose to make them well. I am so sorry and completely understanding of your feelings. Things will get better in time , you will be able to love another bird , but none have ever replaced my Rosie . Now I have a private rescue/sanctuary and help as many as I can in her honor. BW

I'm so sorry for your loss. If you're in New England, get in touch when you're ready for another bird. I have several DYH at the rescue, ages 7-20. Also some BFAs and an Orange Wing.
