Death from travelling!!!

I cannot reinforce enough my advice NEVER to send your birds in cargo! Look at what happened to this poor woman after paying thousands of dollars to a company that transports pets!

That's horrifying!!!! I had to fly a pet dog once in cargo when we were relocating from the west to the Midwest. I was a basket case just knowing she was down below. Never never never again would I do that. Luckily all ended well but knowing what I know now ...... Never again!

On another board, someone asked me why our rescue doesn't ship birds. Well, this is one reason. Even if the birds get to the destination alive, they are probably traumatized.

Our Turacos went to Houston, but a volunteer drove them all the way there.

Seems that these little birds were small enough to carry on in a travel cage. I have done limited checking with our local international airport when I was considering flying one of my fids to a medical specialist but she is a triton and too large. But the point is even one of my smaller cockatoos would have been allowed on the plane. I would never fly a bird or any animal in cargo on a plane, very sad situation.

Well, the thing is that, sometimes, you have no choice. Animals that are too large to fit into a carrier that fits under the seat have to go in cargo UNLESS you find another method of transportation which, sometimes, it's not even possible.

The problem lies with the laws. If pet animals were not property, the airlines would be responsible for their welfare but, as it is, if they kill your beloved parrot, the only thing they would do, if you are lucky and fight them with lawyers, is for them to reimburse you for your expenses, including the monetary value of replacing it -which, as we all know, doesn't work at all!

I don't think they allow any animal as carry on in international flights. Its been over nine years since I moved from Ireland to Australia but that was the rule back then.

Yes, they do but I guess it depends on the carrier itself because not all of them have pressurized and temperature controlled cargo areas.

I think that most of the cruise lines allow dogs and cats (they even have a person called something like 'Pet Steward' who walks and even feeds the animals) but I don't know about parrots although I would imagine that they would be easier than a dog.
